Product requirements

The most important part of publishing your products to Google Merchant Center is making sure that they have the data that Google requires. If your products don't have the right data, then Google shows errors and doesn't publish your products. Product options, including variants, need to be in English to use the Google Shopping app.

You need to enter some specific information about each product that you want to publish on Google Shopping. For most products, you need to enter the following data:

Google has specific requirements for products that have Apparel & Accessories, Media, or Book set as the Google Product Category. You need to add product information about additional attributes for products in these categories.

Set a Google Product Category

To make sure that your products are categorized properly, you should add a Google Product Category to each product that you sync with Google. If you aren't sure which category to choose for your products, then read Google's guide to product categories for more information. If you don't add a product category, then Google will automatically assign one to the product, but you might encounter errors.

Google also has specific requirements for products that have Apparel & Accessories, Media, or Book set as the Google Product Category. You need to add product information about additional attributes for products in these categories.

Steps:

  1. From the Shopify admin, go to Apps > Google Shopping > Products.
  2. Click Edit Google Shopping field.
  3. In the Google Product Category field, enter the category for your product.
  4. Click Save.

Add unique product identifiers

Unless you are selling custom products, Google requires you to have one of the following unique product identifiers for each of your products:

These identifiers let Google match your product with similar products on Google Shopping. If these identifiers aren't correct, then Google doesn't publish your products and your account could be suspended.

You can read more about Google unique product identifiers.

GTIN (Global Trade Item Number)

GTINs are set by editing the Barcode field on each product's variant. A GTIN can be any of the following:

GTIN Name Format
UPC Universal Product Code 12-digit number
EAN International Article Number 13-digit number
JAN Japanese Article Number 13-digit number
ISBN International Standard Book Number 10- or 13-digit number

You can add a GTIN from a product's variant details page.

Steps:

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products, and then select the product.
  2. In the Inventory section, click Edit beside a variant.
  3. In the Barcode field, enter your unique product identifier.
  4. Click Save.

MPN (Manufacturer Part Number)

MPN is a unique number supplied by the manufacturer of the product.

Add product information to meet specific category requirements

Google has specific requirements for products that have Apparel & accessories, Media, or Book set as the Google Product Category. When you select a category for a product in the Google Shopping app, you can add this additional product information. If you don't provide all of the required product information for a product's assigned category, then you receive a notification in Google Merchant Center, and you should update any missing product information.

Apparel & accessories product requirements

Products that are considered apparel or accessories might require specific product data to be published successfully. To determine if you need to include the product data, see Google Merchant Center Help guidelines:

Media product requirements

If you are selling in the Music, Movies, or Video games categories, then you are required to add a GTIN (UPC, EAN, or JAN).

Book product requirements

If you are selling in the Books category, then you are required to add a GTIN (ISBN) to your products.
