Customizing payment methods and delivery options at checkout

Enhancing the checkout experience through customized payment methods and delivery options can help improve customer satisfaction and streamline your transactions. Depending on your subscription plan and geographic location, certain customization elements are available to you.

Eligibility requirements for customizing payment methods and delivery options at checkout

Before you begin customizing your payment methods and delivery options, ensure your store meets the following criteria:

  • Subscription plan: Your store must be subscribed to at least the Basic Shopify plan.
  • Checkout app installation: You must have a compatible checkout app installed from the Shopify App Store.
  • Checkout extensibility (Shopify Plus only): Advanced customizations are available for stores on the Shopify Plus plan, which include direct editing capabilities through checkout extensibility features.
  • App type compatibility: Depending on whether your store is on a Shopify Plus plan or Basic Shopify plan or higher, different types of apps might be available to you:

Understanding payment method customizations

Payment method customization at checkout is a feature that allows you to tailor how payment options are presented to your customers, enhancing the checkout experience and potentially increasing conversion rates. These customizations include the ability to hide, rename, or sort payment methods. However, the specific functions available can vary by app, as not all apps offer the same level of customization.

Availability based on subscription and geography

The ability to rename, hide, or sort payment fields at checkout is subject to certain limitations:

  • Shopify Plus merchants: If you're on the Shopify Plus plan, then you have the added capability to customize credit card fields directly. This means that you can hide, rename, or sort credit card options in addition to other payment methods.
  • Non-Shopify Plus merchants: Merchants with Basic Shopify plans or higher, but not on Shopify Plus, still have access to payment method customization apps. However, in the United States and Canada, these customizations are limited to non-credit card payment methods. While you can hide, rename, or sort alternative payment methods, any custom settings applied to credit card fields won't apply at checkout, and credit card options will remain standard as offered by Shopify. To access credit card field customizations in the United States and Canada, upgrading to Shopify Plus is required.
