Geolocation

The Geolocation app makes language and currency recommendations to your customers based on their geographic location and browser or device language. This feature lets customers view your store in their preferred language and check out in their preferred currency. The Geolocation app also adds a selector in the footer of your online store that allows your customers to choose their language and currency.

After a recommendation for currency switching is accepted or dismissed, your customer will not see a currency recommendation for your store for 14 days. This wait time is reset if the customer clears their cookies. Language recommendations appear in every new session.

Requirements for using the Geolocation app

To use the Geolocation app, you must sell in multiple languages and/or in multiple currencies. The Geolocation app offers recommendations only for the languages and/or currencies that you have enabled.

Geolocation recommends only the languages and currencies that you've enabled for your store. If you don't use either of these Shopify features, then you can't use Geolocation to make recommendations. Learn more about selling cross-border.

Install the Geolocation app

  1. Go to the Geolocation app page.
  2. Click Add app. If you aren't logged into your Shopify account, then you are prompted to log in.
  3. Click Install app.

You can remove the Geolocation app from your store by following these steps:

After the Geolocation app is uninstalled, you don't need to remove any unused code snippets from your theme template.

Preview currency and language recommendations

You can preview your currency and language recommendations in the Geolocation app before you publish them in your store.

If you want to preview recommendations in your store, then the Geolocation app will not make recommendations when you are browsing in the store's default currency and language. For example, if you have a store with USD as the default currency and English as the default language, when you visit your store within the United States, no recommendation will appear as the store already matches your preferences.

Previewing recommendations doesn't work if you're already in a location or use a currency that is the same as the default language and currency of your store. Use a VPN service to simulate browsing from another country to preview recommendations from specific locations.

Publish recommendations

If you publish the currency and language and recommendations, then they are available in your store. For example, if your store is based in the United States, then your default currency is likely USD and your default language will be English. The Geolocation app would recommend to visitors from France to browse in Euros and French, if these are options enabled in your currency and language sections. If you don't have these currency and language options enabled, then your store would stay in the default currency and language.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Apps.
  2. Click Geolocation.
  3. Under Recommendations, click Publish.

The status changes to "Published on your online store". Your customers will see all published languages and currencies by default. They can choose their preferred language and currency for browsing the store.

If you click Unpublish, then the status changes to "Not published on your online store" and the recommendations are removed.

Customize recommendation settings

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Apps.
  2. Click Geolocation.
  3. Under the Recommendations section, click Customize.
  4. Customize the recommendations.
  5. Click Save.

Publish selectors

Selectors let your visitors select their language and currency at any time. You can add currency and language selectors to the footer of your online store.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Apps.
  2. Click Geolocation.
  3. Under Selectors, click publish.
  4. Click Save.

If you click Unpublish, then the status changes to "Not published on your online store" and the selectors are removed.

Customize selector settings

You can change the position of the language and currency selector in your footer.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Apps.
  2. Click Geolocation.
  3. Under the Selectors section, click Customize.
  4. Select Left, Center, or Right.
  5. Click Save.

Your language and currency recommendations appear in the footer of your store.
