Importing contact lists from Mailchimp manually

This guide explains how you can import your contacts from Mailchimp to Shopify.

Export contact lists from Mailchimp

Before you can import your contacts to Shopify, you first need to export them from Mailchimp. Follow the instructions in View or Export List to export your contacts from Mailchimp.

Clean up the file

After you've exported your contacts from Mailchimp, you'll have a ZIP file saved to your computer. This ZIP file contains a CSV file with subscribed members list. If there were any unsubscribed members in your contacts, then you'll have another CSV file with unsubscribed members list. You need to unzip the ZIP file, and then clean up each CSV file to make it ready for import.

Steps:

  1. Upload the CSV file to Google Sheets.

  2. In your spreadsheet, keep only the following column headers, and delete the others.

    • Email Address
    • First Name
    • Last Name
    • Phone Number
    • Company
  3. Rename the following column headers:

    • From Email Address to Email
    • From Phone Number to Phone
  4. Add a new column header named Accepts Marketing.

  5. If your file name begins with subscribed_members, then enter Yes for the Accepts Marketing column.

  6. If your file name begins with nonsubscribed_members, then enter No for the Accepts Marketing column.

  7. Export the file to your computer in CSV format.

Import the file into Shopify

After you have cleaned up your CSV files, you need to import each of these files to your Shopify store to complete your import.

Troubleshoot errors

While trying to import your CSV file to Shopify, if you encounter the following error, then it means that the column header names don't match. Check if the column header names in your CSV file match the names given in the steps above.
