Discount types

You can create flexible discount options to help boost sales, reward customers, and manage promotions in your Shopify store. These discounts can be used in your advertising campaigns, website copy, and upsell strategies on product pages or in your online store cart.

Discount types

You can provide discounts in many different ways, such as offering specific amounts off of an order, providing free shipping, or offering discounts only at certain order volumes.

Review the following types to learn what discounts you can offer through your store:

  • Amount off discounts: These discounts provide a perfectage or fixed-amount off of an order, such as 25% or $50 CAD. This discount can apply to a specific product, a collection of products, or an entire order.
  • Buy X get Y discounts: These discounts let you set specific purchase requirements for a customer to receive a discount. These can be be applied as discount codes or as discounts that get automatically applied to a customer's cart when the meet the requirements.
  • Free shipping discounts: This lets you set up free shipping for customers who meet certain criteria. You can also exclude shipping rates that cost over a specific amount to avoid discounting very expensive shipping options.

Discount codes versus automatic discounts

Discount codes require your customer to enter in the discount at checkout to receive the discount. Instead, automatic discounts applied to a customer's orders as soon as they meet the requirements.

These two methods allow you to provide discounts in different ways:

  • If you wanted to send out an email campaign to a specific subset of your existing customers, then you could include a discount code for them to enter at checkout.
  • If you wanted to run a promotion for free shipping on every order over a specific holiday, then you could add an automatic discount for everyone to create a seamless discount experience.
