Connect your third-party domain to Shopify manually

If you purchased your domain from a domain provider other than Google Domains, GoDaddy, or 1&1 IONOS, and you have their requirements, then you can connect your domain to Shopify manually.

Shopify Support can't access your third-party domain's settings. If you have trouble setting up your domain, then you must work with your domain provider. Shopify Support can only advise you about what information you might need to give to your domain provider.

Before you begin

To complete this procedure, you need to have the following information:

  • your login information for your third-party domain provider account
  • your domain provider's requirements
  • the Shopify IPv4 address 23.227.38.65
  • the Shopify IPv6 address 2620:0127:f00f:5::
  • the www CNAME record shops.myshopify.com.

Some third-party domain hosts won't accept a condensed IPv6 address. If the condensed IPv6 address above is rejected by your third-party domain host, then you will need to use the expanded version. Shopify's expanded IPv6 address is 2620:0127:f00f:0005:0000:0000:0000:0000.

You can have only one A record and one www CNAME record associated with your domain. If your domain already has an A record or www CNAME record, then you need to change these records to point to Shopify. You can have multiple CNAME records associated with your domain, but each one must have a unique name, such as www or shop.

Step 1: Change your DNS records in your third-party domain provider account

  1. On your domain provider’s website, log in to your account.
  2. Find the DNS settings or domain management area.
  3. Change the following records:
    1. Point the A record to the Shopify IPv4 address 23.227.38.65.
    2. If necessary, then change the Host name to the @ symbol.
    3. Delete any other A records on the domain if there are any present.
    4. Point the AAAA record to the Shopify IPv6 address 2620:0127:f00f:5::.
    5. If necessary, then change the Host name to the @ symbol.
    6. Delete any other AAAA records on the domain if there are any present.
    7. Point the CNAME record with the name www to shops.myshopify.com.. Be sure to include the period at the end of the domain.
  4. Save your changes.

You don't need to change the TTL number in your DNS settings. Use the default value.

Step 2: Connect your domain to Shopify

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Domains.
  2. Click Connect existing domain.
  3. In the Domain field, enter your domain, such as johns-apparel.info, and then click Next.
  4. Click Connect domain.

It might take up to 48 hours for your domain to be verified. After it's verified, your domain is listed in the Domain section of the Domains page with the status Connected.

If the message This domain is already connected to another Shopify store is displayed, then you need to verify your domain ownership. Learn more about troubleshooting issues with domains connected to Shopify.
