Accept payments in the Shopify app with Tap to Pay

Early access

Tap to Pay in the Shopify app is in early access and is available only on certain stores.

You can make in-person sales by creating draft orders and then capturing payment directly in the Shopify app with Tap to Pay.

Tip

If you have Shopify POS, then you can also set up and accept payments with Tap to Pay on iPhone or Android for your POS locations.

Considerations for Tap to Pay in the Shopify app

Review the following considerations for using Tap to Pay in the Shopify app:

• Tap to Pay in the Shopify app is available only in the US.
• Only the store owner or organization owner set up Tap to Pay in the Shopify app. After Tap to Pay is set up, then users with the required permissions can use Tap to Pay in the Shopify app.
• If you have Shopify POS, then you can also set up Tap to Pay in the POS app on iPhone or Android. You must set up Tap to Pay in the Shopify app and Tap to Pay in the POS app separately.

Eligibility requirements for Tap to Pay in the Shopify app

Review the following eligibility requirements to set up and use Tap to Pay in the Shopify app:

• You must be using Shopify Payments as your payment processor. Learn more about Shopify Payments.
• The store owner or organization owner must have an Apple business account Tap to Pay in the Shopify app on iPhone.
• Your store must be located in the US.
• You must have the Shopify app installed. Learn more about the Shopify app.
• You must activate the following permissions for the Shopify app in your mobile device settings:
  • Location access permissions.
  • Bluetooth access.

Required role permissions

Staff members require the following store permissions to use Tap to Pay in the Shopify app:

• Orders > Charge credit card
• Draft orders

You can assign users the default Customer Support store role to grant them the required permissions for using tap to pay on mobile. The Customer Support role has additional permissions, so you can also create a new role for Tap to Pay in the Shopify app access.

Set up Tap to Pay in the Shopify app

To set up Tap to Pay in the Shopify app, verify that you meet the requirements. You must be the store owner to set up Tap to Pay.

During set up, you might be prompted to open your device settings to activate location or bluetooth access for the Shopify app.

iPhone

1. From the Shopify app, tap > Settings.

2. Tap Payments.

3. In the Shopify Payments section, tap Manage.

4. In the Tap to Pay on iPhone section, tap Set up Tap to Pay on iPhone.

5. Verify the Apple ID and select your Apple ID:

6. Tap Continue with This Apple ID to use your current Apple ID or tap Use a Different Apple ID to select a different Apple ID.

7. Accept Apple's terms of service.

8. After the set up is complete, tap Done.

Android

1. From the Shopify app, tap > Settings.

2. Tap Payments.

3. In the Shopify Payments section, tap Manage.

4. In the Tap to Pay on Android section, tap Tap to Pay on Android.

5. After the set up is complete, tap Done.

Capture payment with Tap to Pay in the Shopify app

Note

After you first set up Tap to Pay, you might need to wait up to 30 seconds before you can capture payments. If the Collect Payment > Tap to Pay button is greyed out, then wait 30 seconds and then try again.

To capture payment with Tap to Pay in the Shopify app, you can create a new draft order, or complete payment for an existing draft order. Learn more about creating draft orders.

Steps:

iPhone

1. From the Shopify app, tap the icon .
2. Tap Draft orders.
3. Tap the existing draft order that you want to capture payment for, or create a new draft order.
4. In the Payment section, tap Collect Payment > Tap to Pay on iPhone.
5. The Tap to Pay on iPhone interface displays indicating where your customer should hold their contactless credit card, debit card or their mobile wallet on their smartphone or smartwatch.
6. Ask the customer to hold their contactless card horizontally or device at the top of the iPhone, over the contactless symbol. Transactions that require PIN entry will automatically prompt a PIN entry screen. Wait until the Done animation indicates the payment has been completed, and the transaction is being processed.

Android

1. From the Shopify app, tap the icon .
2. Tap Draft orders.
3. Tap the existing draft order that you want to capture payment for, or create a new draft order.
4. In the Payment section, tap Collect Payment > Tap to Pay on Android.
5. The Tap to Pay on Android interface displays indicating where your customer should hold their contactless credit card, debit card, or their mobile wallet on their smartphone or smartwatch.
6. Ask the customer to hold their contactless payment method behind the tap area until the animation indicates the payment has been completed and you hear the Tap to Pay on Android success sound.
