Brother QL label printer

You can use the Brother QL label printer to print shipping labels. You can connect the Brother QL label printer using USB cable, a wired LAN connection, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi. On this page learn how to set up and connect the Brother QL label printer.

Set up your Brother QL label printer

Follow these steps to set up your label printer.

Steps:

1. Make sure that the power switch located on the back of the printer is set to Off.
2. Connect the power cable to your Brother label printer, then plug the other end into a grounded AC power outlet.
3. Pull the levers on both sides of the printer to open the label compartment.
4. Place the label roll into the spool guide. Make sure that the spool arms are firmly seated in their mounts.
5. Feed the label roll through the label printer. Keep the label roll straight to avoid skewed labels or label jams.
6. Close the label compartment.
7. Press the power button to turn the label printer On.
8. Press the feed button to align the end of the label roll.

Connect your Brother QL label printer to your desktop computer or laptop

You can connect the Brother label printer to your Windows or Mac computer using a USB cable, a wired LAN connection, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi. Before you connect your label printer to your computer, you need to download the label printer software from the Brother's website, and then install the software to your computer.

Steps:

USB

1. Turn off your label printer.
2. Connect the USB cable to the USB port of your label printer.
3. Connect the USB cable to your desktop or laptop computer.
4. Turn the label printer on.

LAN

1. Turn your label printer off.
2. Connect the LAN cable to the LAN port of your label printer.
3. Connect the LAN cable to an active LAN port of the network.
4. Turn the label printer on.

Bluetooth

1. Turn the label printer on.
2. Press and hold the Bluetooth button on your label printer until the blue Bluetooth LED begins flashing.
3. On your desktop or laptop computer, go to your Bluetooth settings and select your label printer.

Wi-Fi

1. Turn the label printer on.
2. Press and hold the Wi-Fi button on the front of the printer until the green Wi-Fi LED begins flashing.
3. On your desktop or laptop computer, go to your Wi-Fi settings.
4. In the list of available networks, select the label printer. The default name of the printer is DIRECT-#####, where ##### is the last 5 digits of your printer's serial number.
5. At the prompt, enter the printer's password. The default password is 111#####, where ##### is the last 5 digits of the printer's serial number.

Connect your Brother QL label printer to your iOS device

The label printer supports Wi-Fi connectivity. You can connect your label printer to your iOS device using Airdrop or Wi-Fi Direct.

Airdrop

Steps:

1. Connect the label printer to the same Wi-Fi as your device.
2. Download and open the Printer Setting tool. To download the tool, visit Brother's website.
3. In Communications type, confirm that the printer is connected using a wireless network connection. If your device and the label printer are connected to the same wireless network, then the printer is accessible from Shopify POS.

Wi-Fi Direct

Steps:

1. Connect the label printer to your computer with the provided USB cable.
2. Download and open the Printer Setting tool. To download the tool, visit Brother's website.
3. In Communications settings, confirm that the Wireless Direct setting is activated:
   • On Mac: Click the Wireless LAN tab, and then activate the Wireless Direct setting.
   • On Windows: In the Selected Interface section, select Infrastructure and Wireless Direct or Wireless Direct, and then click Apply.
4. Press and hold the Wi-Fi button on the front of the printer until the green Wi-Fi LED begins flashing.
5. On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
6. In the list of available networks, tap the label printer. The default name of the printer is DIRECT-#####, where ##### is the last 5 digits of your printer's serial number.
7. At the prompt, enter the printer's password. The default password is 111#####, where ##### is the last 5 digits of the printer's serial number.

Bluetooth

Steps:

1. Press and hold the Bluetooth button on your label printer until the blue Bluetooth LED begins flashing.
2. On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth and select your label printer.
