Duty and tax inclusive pricing for Managed Markets

Tax-inclusive pricing

Tax-inclusive pricing lets you decide whether to automatically include or exclude taxes in your product prices based on your customer's region for each market that you sell to. For example, customers in some countries or regions, such as the United Kingdom, expect product prices that are inclusive of their local value added tax (VAT). In other countries or regions, such as the United States, customers expect taxes to be excluded on your online store and added at checkout, if applicable.

Tax-inclusive prices applies in the following regions:

  • United Kingdom
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • European Union
  • Mexico
  • Israel
  • Norway
  • Switzerland
  • Singapore
  • Japan

For all other countries and regions, taxes are still calculated and displayed at checkout.

Before you activate tax-inclusive pricing for your markets, review the following resources:

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Markets.
  2. Select the market that you want to update.
  3. Click Duties and import taxes.
  4. In the Collecting in prices or at checkout section, click the pencil icon.
  5. In the Taxes section, select Include in prices unless overridden by country/region.
  6. Click Save.

When making your selection, you can preview how prices are displayed to your customers in the checkout.

Duty-inclusive pricing

When duty-inclusive pricing is activated, duties aren't added to the price of your products at checkout. Instead, customers are informed that their total includes duties. Before you activate this feature, review the following considerations:

  • Duties aren't automatically included in or added to your product prices or checkout. Instead, the charge for duties is omitted entirely. Determine whether you want to pay the cost of duties yourself, or adjust your product prices to compensate.
  • When you activate duty-inclusive pricing, an average cost of duties is provided based on your store's previous sales as a percentage so that you can adjust your prices. If there aren't enough orders to provide a reliable average, then an estimate of duties costs for that market is displayed based on data from comparable stores.
  • Customers are informed at checkout that their price includes duties. You might also want to include this information in your store by adding an announcement bar to your header, or by adding additional product information on product pages.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Markets.
  2. Select the market that you want to update.
  3. Click Duties and import taxes.
  4. In the Collecting in prices or at checkout section, click the pencil icon.
  5. In the Duties section, select Don't add to total at checkout.
  6. Optional: Review and record the average cost of duties to adjust your product prices later.
  7. Click Save.

When making your selection, you can preview how prices are displayed to your customers in the checkout. You can review how much you spend on duties at any time to ensure that you adjust your prices accordingly.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Analytics > Total sales.
  2. Optional: Add the Market name column to your report to review duties costs by market.
  3. Divide the amount in the Duties column by the amount in the Net sales column to determine the percentage of sales associated with duties.
