Partial market management on Managed Markets

You can use partial market management with Managed Markets when you want to self-manage some markets and set others to be managed by Managed Markets. For example, if you have a fulfillment location or a business entity in another country that isn't supported by Managed Markets, then you can manage the market yourself to continue your normal business operations.

Considerations for Managed Markets sellers about using self-managed markets

A self-managed market is a market that you want to retain liability and control over. Managed Markets will not manage sales on your behalf in these markets. In addition to this:

  • Payments processed for customers within self-managed markets are not subject to Managed Markets fees. Normal transaction processing fees apply.
  • Managed Markets will not manage or enforce product restrictions for self-managed markets.
  • Self-managed markets do not receive access to any of the additional Managed Markets features or benefits:
    • You will be your own merchant of record for sales into these markets.
    • Duties and taxes will not be collected in self-managed markets by default. You can collect duties and taxes with Shopify's native duty and tax calculator. Collected duties amounts are not guaranteed.
    • You are responsible for the correct tax collection and/or remittance.
    • You are responsible for chargebacks and fraud mitigation.
    • You are responsible for shipping rates and labels with your chosen provider.

Additional information

  • You can change a market to be self-managed or change a self-managed market to be managed by Managed Markets at any time.
  • When you change the management settings for a market that doesn't have applicable shipping rates, default shipping rates will be added to your shipping zones automatically. Check your shipping zones after changing the market's management settings, or define your shipping zones before changing the market's management settings.
  • Self-managed markets use the Harmonized Item Description codes (HS codes) added to your products by Managed Markets. You can't edit these codes.

Selecting markets to self-manage before Managed Markets activation

If you have applied for Managed Markets and are yet to be approved, then you can still select the markets that you want to self-manage before activation.

Steps

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Markets, and click a market that you want to self-manage.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Under Merchant of record, click Edit.
  4. Select your store.
  5. Click Save.

When Managed Markets is activated, the markets that you have identified to be self-managed will continue to work in the same way that they were prior to your Managed Markets activation, with no changes to settings for those markets based on Managed Markets.

Selecting markets to self-manage after Managed Markets activation

When you are activated on Managed Markets, you can change any of your markets to be self-managed. You will be responsible for sales in the market immediately after you update the setting to make the market self-managed. Any orders taken in that market prior to the change need to be fulfilled with a Managed Markets shipping label.

Steps

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Markets, and click the market that you want to self-manage.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Under Merchant of record, click Edit.
  4. Select your store.
  5. Click Save.
