Checkout methods for Facebook and Instagram by Meta
If you have Facebook and Instagram by Meta installed in your store, then customers can check out on your Shopify store or directly on Facebook and Instagram using Checkout on Instagram, depending on your store's location. To learn if you're eligible for Checkout on Facebook and Instagram, then refer to the eligibility requirements.
If you're not based in a region that supports Checkout on Facebook and Instagram, then you can sell with Shops and your customers check out from your Shopify store.

Eligibility for using Checkout on Facebook and Instagram
Checkout on Facebook and Instagram is a Meta product, and is powered by Shopify Payments. The requirements for using Checkout on Facebook and Instagram are determined by Meta.
It can take up to 48 hours to be approved by Facebook after setup is complete.
Requirements for using Checkout on Facebook and Instagram
Before you use Checkout on Facebook and Instagram, review the following requirements:
- Checkout with Facebook and Instagram is available only to stores in the United States. For businesses in other markets, you can sell with Shops using checkout on another website or checkout with messaging until further notice about Changes to Shops on the Meta Business Help Center.
- Facebook determines the sales tax for products that you sell on Facebook and Instagram based on the tax registration number that you provide. If your business is registered, then you need to provide a valid state tax registration number for every state where you operate a physical location. Otherwise, you can use your Social Security Number (SSN) as your tax registration number.
- When you set up shipping information, you need to set a standard shipping option in your Shopify admin Shipping settings. You can also set up additional shipping options, such as expedited shipping.
- Your Facebook account needs to be connected to a bank account so that you can receive payments for orders placed on Facebook and Instagram. In your Shopify admin, click Settings > Payments, and then click Go to Facebook to enter or edit your bank account information on Facebook. - You need to add a return policy for orders placed on Facebook and Instagram.
- Orders placed on Facebook and Instagram must be fulfilled within 30 days.
- You need to provide customers with a tracking number for deliveries.
- Products sold on Facebook and Instagram must follow Facebook Commerce Policies.
- Products sold on Facebook and Instagram must follow Shopify Payments Terms of Service.
Meta Commerce eligibility requirements
To use Checkout on Facebook and Instagram, your store must meet the following Commerce eligibility requirements:
- You need to have a Shopify online store based in the United States, and the store can't be password protected.
- If you want to sell on Instagram, then your account needs to be a professional profile or a creator account associated with the Facebook Page for your business. - Your Facebook Page must comply with Facebook's Terms of Service, Commercial Terms, and Community Standards.
- Your Instagram professional account must comply with Instagram's Terms of Use, and Community Guidelines.
- Your products must be available for direct purchase from your verified domain.
- Your business must be located in a Supported Market for Facebook Commerce Surfaces.
- You must have Shopify Payments, or Shop Pay for third-party gateways activated in your Payments settings. Meta might require you to activate PayPal as well.
Using Checkout on Facebook or Instagram
Checkout on Facebook and Facebook lets shoppers make purchases directly on Facebook and Instagram. If your store is located in the United States, and you have Shopify Payments activated, then Checkout on Facebook and Instagram activates automatically when you set up Facebook and Instagram by Meta.
Considerations
Review the following considerations for having your customers check out directly on Facebook and Instagram:
- If a customer is shopping on your store's Facebook page or Instagram account, then they can select Buy now to purchase products directly on Facebook or Instagram.
- The customer's payment and shipping details are saved securely for future purchases.
- Instagram users can tag your products in their own posts, which lets other customers purchase the product directly from those posts.
- Facebook and Instagram can send push notifications, countdowns, and product stickers to help drive sales of your next product release.
- If your products have the Include sales tax in product price and shipping rate setting active, then your products can't be sold using Checkout on Facebook and Instagram.
- If you sell internationally, then you can activate Dynamic tax-inclusive pricing to include or exclude taxes based on your customer's location.
- Facebook and Instagram can activate ad retargeting at all points of your customer's journey.
- As of July 1, 2023, Meta no longer charges a 5% selling fee per shipment. However, payment processing fees still apply and are charged by Shopify directly.
- If you're using Shopify Payments, then you're charged the same processing fees as your online store by Shopify.
- If you're using Shop Pay for third-party gateways, then this won't impact the fees for your store’s existing processor.
- If you want to sell directly on Facebook and Instagram, then you need to comply with Facebook's Commerce eligibility requirements. This includes requirements such as a minimum return window of 30 days.
- Carrier-calculated shipping rates aren't available when customers check out on Facebook or Instagram.
- Discounts created in your Shopify admin can be applied to sales made through checking out on Facebook or Instagram.
- Subscriptions, preorders, and try-before-you-buy are unavailable when a customer checks out on Facebook or Instagram.
- The only customer information that you receive from the order is the customer’s name, email address, and shipping address. Customer email addresses collected through checking out on Facebook and Instagram can only be used for marketing purposes if the customer opts in.
Check out from your Shopify store

Review the following considerations for having your customers check out from your Shopify store:
- If a customer is shopping on your store's Facebook page or Instagram account, then they can select View on website to be redirected to your Shopify store where they can complete their purchase.
- You can customize your customer's online store checkout experience. These customizations include allowing discounts and subscriptions, custom branding and messaging, and preorder options.
- You can use enhanced shipping options, such as flat shipping rates and carrier calculated shipping rates.
- There are lower selling fees. Selling fees are based on your Shopify store's plan.
- Customers shopping directly from your online store means that your store gets more traffic, and can lead to larger purchases.
