Setting up shipping rates with Handshake
To process orders through Handshake, you might need to adjust your current shipping settings in Shopify. The Handshake checkout uses the shipping settings in your Shopify admin, so make sure that your shipping settings and rates work for your wholesale orders.
You must have a shipping rate with a shipping zone that includes the US. Otherwise, retailers can't choose a shipping method at checkout and can't place an order from your business.
If your current rates don't work for your wholesale orders, then you can set up your Shopify store to display different shipping rates for your customers and retailers by using one of the following methods:
- setting conditional shipping rates based on order price
- duplicating your products and giving them custom shipping rates using shipping profiles
- setting custom shipping rates using a shipping rate app
If your current shipping rates don't work for your wholesale orders and you also can't use any of the methods above to charge different shipping rates, then you can charge custom shipping amounts after a customer places their order.
Set wholesale shipping rates using conditional shipping rates
You can set wholesale shipping rates that appear only to orders that reach your minimum order value for wholesale orders.
This method works best if you have no retail orders that reach the value of your minimum wholesale orders. Such as if your maximum retail order value is around $200 USD and your minimum wholesale order value is $300 USD. If your retail and wholesale order values overlap, then your retail orders will have wholesale shipping rate options at checkout.
If you have free shipping rates for retail values and have their maximum order value set to
No limit, then this method will cause your wholesale orders to have an option for a free shipping rate at checkout. For this method to work correctly, you need to change the maximum order value for your retail values to a specific amount.
Create the conditional rates
Complete the following steps for each of your shipping profiles.
From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Shipping and delivery.
Next to your shipping profile, click Manage rates.
Optional: Change the maximum order value for each of your free shipping rates:
- Next to the free shipping rate, click the ... button > Edit rate.
- In Maximum price, enter a value just below your minimum wholesale order value. For example, if your minimum wholesale order value is $500 USD, then enter
- Click Done.
For each shipping zone, create your wholesale shipping rates:
- Click Add rate
- Enter a rate name and price.
- Click Add conditions.
- Click Based on order price.
- Set the conditions. Make sure that your Minimum price is at least your minimum wholesale order value.
Example shipping set up with conditional rates
For example, suppose that you have the following shipping rates for your customers:
|Order value range||Shipping charge|
|$0 USD - $24.99 USD||$5 USD|
|$25.00 USD - $49.99 USD||$7 USD|
|$50.00 USD - $99.99 USD||$10 USD|
|Over $100.00 USD||Free shipping|
Suppose the maximum order that you've received from your customers is $250 USD and your minimum wholesale order is set to $400 USD. You can adjust your shipping rates to be the following:
|Order value range||Shipping charge||Intended customer type|
|$0 USD - $24.99 USD||$5 USD||Customers|
|$25 USD - $49.99 USD||$7 USD||Customers|
|$50 USD - $99.99 USD||$10 USD||Customers|
|$100 USD - $399.99 USD||Free shipping||Customers|
|$400 USD - $499.99 USD||$40 USD||Retailers|
|$500 USD - $749.99 USD||$50 USD||Retailers|
|$750 USD - $999.99 USD||$75 USD||Retailers|
|Over $1000 USD||Free shipping||Retailers|
Set wholesale shipping rates using shipping profiles
Instead of keeping the same set of shipping rates for all your products, and changing the available rates based on order value, you can give specific shipping rates to specific products using shipping profiles. This way, all your wholesale products have one set of shipping rules, while your retail products have a different set of shipping rules.
If you don't have separate products in your Shopify admin for retail and wholesale versions of your product, then you first need to create products that are specific to each. You can do this by duplicating a product, and then changing the duplicate product's details to be specifically wholesale or retail.
After you have separate wholesale and retail products, you can create a new shipping profile with your wholesale products.
Set wholesale shipping rates using an app
Some apps can provide more robust shipping solutions and apply them to your shipping settings in your Shopify admin. Visit the Shopify App Store to find which apps might work best with your business.
