Setting up email forwarding for your Shopify domain

Email forwarding is a service that lets you direct an email from your custom domain to an existing email account. If you buy a domain through Shopify, or transfer your domain to Shopify, then you can set up an unlimited number of forwarding email addresses for free. For example, if your Shopify-managed domain is johns-apparel.com, then you can set up the forwarding email address info@johns-apparel.com.

Email hosting isn't provided on Shopify. If you want to send an email from your custom domain forwarding address, then you need to use a third-party email hosting service. If you use Zoho Mail or Google Workspace, then you can connect the hosting service to your domain in Shopify. If you use another email hosting service, then you can add an MX record to connect it to your domain by editing your DNS settings.

Set up email forwarding

All new email addresses that you create in Shopify must be forwarded to an existing email address, for example, through Gmail or Outlook. You can set up multiple email forwards to go to different email addresses.

Steps:

  1. In the Shopify-managed domains section, click the domain that you want to set up email forwarding for.

  2. Click Add forwarding email address.

  3. In the Store email address text box, enter the email address that you want to create for your custom domain. You don't need to type the @ symbol or anything that follows it.

  4. In the Forwarding email address text box, enter your full destination email address.

  5. Click Save.

Use this method to create as many forwarding email addresses as you want for your store.

Test your email forwarding

To test your email forwarding, send a test email from a different email address to each of the forwarding addresses that you've created.

Reply to customer emails

You can't reply to customers from your custom domain email address. If you want to reply to a customer email, then you must do so directly from the address you forwarded your emails to. This email address is the address that will appear in your customer's inbox.

Sending emails from your forwarding address

Email hosting is not provided when you buy a domain through Shopify. If you want to send an email from your custom domain forwarding address, then you need to use a third-party email hosting service.

The following services are two examples of third-party email hosting services that you can use to send email from your forwarding email address:

  • Zoho Mail provides email accounts for your custom domain

  • Google Workspace connects to the Gmail platform with emails for your custom domain

Connect Zoho Mail or Google Workspace email hosting to your domain

Before you can connect your email service to Shopify, you need to verify your domain and create your custom email address in Zoho Mail or Google Workspace.

Steps:

  1. In the Shopify-managed domains section, click the name of the domain you'd like to connect.

  2. Click Use third-party hosting service.

  3. Select your provider, and then enter the information that was provided to you when you verified your domain:

  • If you are using Google Workspace, then enter the TXT code or meta tag.
  • If you are using Zoho Mail, then enter the Zoho code.
  1. Click Save.

After you connect your email hosting to Shopify, you can add the Shopify SPF and DKIM records to help ensure that your email messages are delivered to your customers
