Shopify Privacy & Compliance

Updates have been made to the cookie consent banner and data collection opt-out page based on applicable privacy laws. This replaces content and adds a new preferences pop-up. The banner also defaults to center placement. You can make changes after updates have been implemented.

Shopify Privacy & Compliance is an app that helps merchants to meet applicable privacy regulations. By using the app, you can set up any of the following to display on your online store:

• A cookie consent banner, which asks visitors for their consent to use cookies to collect data. This is required by the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and laws in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, and Switzerland.
• A cookie preferences pop-up. The cookie preferences pop-up adds a link in the cookie consent banner to manage preferences. A visitor to an online store can then choose which types of data a merchant can collect. Allowing visitors to choose granular consent is also required by the GDPR and other privacy regulations.
• A data collection opt-out page. The data collection opt-out page, also referred to as the do not sell or share my personal information page, lets online store visitors opt-out of the selling or sharing of their personal data. This opt-out page is required by certain US State Laws.

Caution

You should verify that the default content in the app is applicable to your business and any third parties that you might install on your store. Consult external legal counsel to discuss questions you might have that are specific to your business and your privacy obligations.

Install the Privacy & Compliance app

Steps

1. Find the Privacy & Compliance app in the Shopify App Store.
2. On the app listing page, click Add app.
3. In your Shopify admin, to authorize the use of the app, click Install app.

After the app is installed, you can view and use it from the Apps page in your Shopify admin.

Uninstall the Privacy & Compliance app

Steps

1. From your Shopify admin, click Settings > Apps and sales channels.
2. Click Remove.

Access the Privacy & Compliance app

Steps

1. From your Shopify admin, click Settings > Apps and sales channels.
2. From the Apps and sales channels page, click Privacy & Compliance.
3. Click Open app.

Cookie consent banner

In the Privacy & Compliance app, you can choose to display a cookie consent banner using default text, or customize it to meet your business needs.

The following customization options are available for the cookie banner:

• Position of the banner (called Banner display)
• Color (light, dark, or custom)
• Content

While choosing what level of customization is right for you, keep the following in mind:

• The default content has been created to help meet legal requirements but may not apply to your specific business or region.
• You should verify the default content to confirm that it applies to your business, and edit the information if needed.

Install default banner

If you are new to the app, you can follow these steps to install a pre-built cookie banner:

1. Check on the Cookie consent banner page that you have created a privacy policy and your privacy policy URL is accurate. You can create a privacy policy in Settings > Policies in your admin.
2. Click the Turn banner on button.

Revert to banner defaults

If you make changes and want to go back to the original defaults, then go to Actions and click Revert to defaults. This will return your cookie banner content and placement and preferences pop-up content back to the defaults.

Preview banner

You can preview how your choices appear on mobile in the preview window on the right side of the screen. To view how the banner appears on your online store, follow these steps:

1. On a desktop device, save your edits by clicking the Save button.
2. Click View on online store.

Cookie preferences pop-up

A cookie preferences pop-up allows visitors to your online store to choose whether they give consent to the ways you may collect and share their information. This includes remembering their preferences, measuring site performance, and personalizing marketing. This is required by the European Union’s GDPR and other privacy regulations.

When you choose to link a preferences pop-up, a Manage preferences link is added to your cookie banner. When a visitor clicks this link, a pop-up will display with information and cookie types which they can select. The default text for this page includes an introduction on how a visitor has control over their data and describes the benefits when visitors select Accept all cookies. It also describes four cookie categories with descriptions.

The color of your cookie preferences pop-up will match the color you’ve chosen for your cookie banner. All content in the preferences pop-up can be edited. The cookie preferences pop-up is displayed in the center of the page of your online store. The placement of the pop-up can’t be customized.

Data collection opt-out page

To help meet certain US State Privacy Laws, you can display a page with options for visitors to limit the collection and sharing of their information.

If you are new to the app, you can choose to display a pre-built data collection opt-out page by adding a menu navigation link and clicking the Activate button. You can also revert any edits to the default content for this page by clicking the Revert to defaults button in the Data collection opt-out page section of the app.
