Add storefront filtering

Storefront filters allow you to set up product filtering on your search and collection pages. When you enable filtering, customers can filter your products by availability, product type, color, or other options to find the products that interest them the most.

Check if your theme supports filtering

Storefront filtering is included with all Online Store 2.0 themes.

To use filters, you need to have an Online Store 2.0 theme installed. If your Online Store 2.0 theme is installed but not in use, then you can still view and set up filtering options for your store, but the options won't be visible to customers.

You can determine if your theme supports filtering by going to Online Store > Navigation in your Shopify admin. If your theme doesn't support filtering, then a message is displayed in the Collection and search filters section. You can still create filters for your store, but they aren't displayed in your online store unless your theme supports the feature.

Default filters

Filters for availability, primary price, vendor, and product type are included by default. Custom filters use your product variants and Metafields to determine which additional filter options are available. For example, if you sell clothing with different variants for size, then you can enable a filter for size.

Custom filters

In addition to the 4 default filters, you can have up to 20 custom filters. Custom filters can be created using your product variant options, or with Metafields. Using Metafields, you can create filters for:

  • single_line_text_field
  • number_integer
  • number_decimal
  • boolean (true or false)

In order to use Metafields for custom filters, the metafield needs to first be created. Learn more about Metafields to set up your custom filter options.

After your single_line_text_field, number_integer, number_decimal, or boolean metafields have been set up, they appear in the list of selectable options in your Add filters screen. You can select up to a maximum of 20 custom filters in addition to the 4 default filter options.

Add filters

Select the filters that will appear on your collection pages.

  1. Scroll down to Collection and search filters.
  2. Click Add filters.
  3. Select one or more filter options from the list of available filters.
  4. Click Done to save your product options.
  5. Click Save to update your collection and search filters.

Filter products

When Collection and search filtering is enabled, the filter options appear above your product listings in your online store. There is no limit to the number of filter criteria a customer can select. After the customer selects a filter option, the resulting list of filtered products will automatically update to display products that match the customer's criteria.
