Understanding Shopify Payments payout statuses

On the Payouts page, you can find the current status of each payout in the All payouts section. The following is a breakdown of the payout statuses you might encounter:

  • Scheduled: The payout is being processed and has been batched together with other transactions. It’s on its way to your bank account and will be sent shortly. The batching process allows multiple transactions to be combined into one payout, making the transfer more efficient. The payout is being processed and will be sent to your bank account soon.
  • Paid: The payout has been sent to your bank. It may take your bank 1-3 business days to process and deposit the funds into your bank account.
  • Failed: The payout could not be processed due to issues with your bank account. You will receive prompts in your Shopify admin with information on how to resolve this. Learn more about failed Shopify Payments payouts.

What to do if your Shopify Payments payout status is paid but not deposited

If your payout status is Paid but you haven’t received the funds in your bank account yet, then the payout is already on its way to your account, but it may take some time for your bank to process and display it. In these cases, you can check the Bank reference, contact your bank with the correct details, and give it some time to display on your statement.

Steps:

  1. Check your payout status: Confirm that your payout status is Paid. This means that the payout has been processed, but it doesn’t always mean that the funds are in your bank account right away.
  2. Use the Bank reference: If your payout status isn’t Failed, then you can try using the Bank reference when contacting your bank. This number can help them find the transaction. However, not all banks use this reference, so if they don’t have it, it doesn’t mean that the payout hasn’t been received.
  3. Contact your bank: If you still can’t find your payout funds, then you can reach out to your bank’s Automated Clearing House (ACH) or Transfers department, as they can search for specific transactions. When you call, be ready to provide the following information to them:
    • The settlement date
    • The payout amount
    • The currency used
  4. Be patient: It’s common for funds to display on your statement shortly after the payout is marked as Paid. Consider waiting a couple of business days to give your bank some time to process and display the funds on your statement.

Common reasons for lower Shopify Payment payouts

Understanding why your payout might be lower than expected can help you manage your finances more effectively. The following are some common reasons for lower payouts and how to investigate them:

  • Review payout details: Begin by reviewing the payout details in your Shopify admin. You can find specific notifications regarding chargebacks or refunds and a breakdown of transaction fees.
  • Export transaction data: To gain a clearer view of your earnings, export your transactions for the relevant period. The CSV file will include columns for Amount, Fee, and Net.

Potential reasons for lower Shopify Payments payouts

If you notice that your payout is less than expected, then there are several reasons why this could occur:

  • Adjustments: Your payout overview may include adjustments, which could either increase or decrease the final amount. The specific nature of these adjustments would be detailed in the payout breakdown. Examples of adjustments include chargeback_fee, chargeback_protection, shopify_collective_debit, shopify_collective_credit, seller_protection, and tax_adjustment.
  • Chargebacks: If any customers initiated a dispute or chargeback, then the payment amount and any associated dispute fees are deducted from your account. This deduction would result in a lower payout.
  • Currency conversion: If you receive payouts in a different currency than the currency you sell in, then the payout amount will be subject to currency conversion, and fees might apply.
  • Negative balance: If your account has a negative balance due to past fees or refunds exceeding your earnings, then your payout may be reduced to cover this balance.
  • Payout holds: Although a payout hold usually delays the entire payout, in some cases, a portion of the funds might be held back while the rest is paid out if the hold is related to a specific issue with certain transactions.
  • Refunds: If you processed any refunds since your last payout, then the refunded amounts are deducted from your next available payout. This would directly reduce the total amount you receive.
  • Reserves: A reserve may be temporarily established to protect against potential losses from disputes.
  • Shopify Payments processing fees: Each transaction incurs processing fees that are deducted from your earnings before the payout is sent. The fee amount depends on your Shopify plan. Learn more about payout fees and how to view your Shopify Payments credit card rate.

Understanding missing Shopify Payments payouts after updating your bank account

If you recently updated your bank account details and haven’t received your payout, then consider the following possibilities for a missing payout.

Account currency mismatch with new bank

Ensure that the currency of your new bank account is supported for Shopify Payments payouts in your region. An account currency mismatch can lead to payout failures.

Account review

After changing your bank account details, a review or verification of the new account may be required. This process can temporarily hold payouts until the review is complete. To stay informed, regularly check your Merchant Alerts in your Shopify admin and your Account Owner email for any notifications related to account verification.

Errors in new account details

It's important to ensure that you’ve entered your new bank account information correctly. Common errors include incorrect account or routing numbers, or selecting the wrong type of account. If there are discrepancies, then this may lead to payout failures.

In such cases, you will receive an email notification from Shopify indicating a problem. The Payouts page in your Shopify admin will also display a Failed status.

To resolve this, you will need to update your bank account information again and possibly retry the payout.

Updating your bank account information while having scheduled Shopify Payments payouts

If you change your bank account details after a payout is already in transit, then that payout will still go to your old bank account. Future payouts will go to your new bank account.

Updating your bank account only affects payouts that haven’t been initiated yet. Usually, updating your account details doesn’t affect your payout schedule. You will need to check with your old bank account to find out if the funds arrive there or if they will be returned.

What to do if your Shopify Payments payout is missing

There are various reasons why your payout might not have arrived as expected. Here’s a checklist of steps to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. Review the payout status: In your Shopify admin, check the status of your payout. If it displays as Paid, then it's likely in transit with your bank.
  2. Check bank processing times: After a payout is marked as Paid, allow 1-3 business days for your bank to process it. Remember, banks don’t process transactions on weekends or holidays.
  3. Verify bank account information: Ensure that your bank account details are accurate and match the information that you provided in your Shopify admin. An incorrect account number or mismatched account type can lead to delays.
  4. Inspect for holds: Temporary holds may occur during account reviews or due to other compliance-related issues. Check for any notifications in your Shopify admin.
  5. Look for email notifications: Review any emails from Shopify about payout issues, bank account updates, or requests for additional information.
  6. Contact your bank: If the payout is marked as Paid and you haven't received it, then share the Bank reference number, also known as the Trace ID, with your bank for further assistance.
