Updating your business details for Shopify Payments in Canada
Shopify regularly reviews and updates the verification requirements for using Shopify Payments. You might be required to update your personal or business information at any time, so that your store remains compliant, and up to date with financial regulations.
Shopify is updating how merchant's business information is collected, validated, and verified for merchants using Shopify Payments in Canada. This guide answers some of the common questions you might have about how to know you must provide additional information, the type of information you might need to provide, and how to resolve issues when collecting the information.

How am I notified to provide additional information?
If additional information is required, then you receive an email explaining what information you must submit. When you receive an email requesting further documentation in order to verify your Shopify Payments account, then you can click Review details in order to update your information on file. It isn't possible to update this information unless you receive an email that states further documentation is required to verify your account.
How do I complete a request to verify personal information?
If you receive a request to verify the information of an individual listed on your Shopify Payments account, then the information listed on your Shopify Payments account might be incorrect. If the information of the individual listed on your Shopify Payments account is incorrect, then you can update it in your Shopify admin, and the system attempts to automatically verify the individual's information.
If the information is correct, but you're receiving a request for verification, then you can resolve the request by uploading separate proof of identity, and proof of address documents using the upload tool in your Shopify admin.
How do I complete a request to verify business information?
If you receive a request to verify your business, or legal entity information, then the information listed on your Shopify Payments account might be incorrect. If the business information listed on your Shopify Payments account is incorrect, then you can update it in your Shopify admin, and the system attempts to automatically verify the business information.
If the information is correct, but you're receiving a request for verification, then you can resolve the request by uploading an acceptable document that contains the business name and address on the Shopify Payments account using the upload tool in your Shopify admin.
Why am I being asked to verify director information?
If you receive a request to verify the information on your company's directors, then it's not possible to verify the information we have on file. If the information of a director is incorrect you can resolve this in your Shopify admin by checking the following information:
- ensure the directors names are correctly entered
- ensure the directors are all marked as "director"
If these checks have been performed, then you can upload an acceptable document that lists all directors in the company. The document must clearly state which individuals are directors and their names must match what is listed on your Shopify Payments account.
What new information do I need to provide?
The information you might be required to provide depends on your business type, but it can include some or all of the following information:
- phone numbers and titles of account representatives (this is required for all businesses)
- names and email addresses of all directors if your business is a corporation, registered charity, or non-profit organization
- names, dates of birth, and email addresses of owners if your business is a corporation or partnership. Anyone that owns 25% or more of the entity is considered an owner
- a business phone number must be provided by all businesses except individual entities and sole proprietorships.
You might also be required to verify the following business details:
- verification of company representatives (this is required for all businesses)
- verification of legal entity is required for all businesses excluding individuals and sole proprietors
- verification of directors is required for corporations, registered charities, and non-profit organizations
- verification of registration status is required for registered charities.
Are there guidelines for uploading verification documents?

Can I use a P.O. Box as my business address?
No. Shopify Payments requires a valid, physical, Canadian address. Due to the requirements of our financial partner, you cannot use a P.O. box as your address.
What happens if I fail to complete the required verification tasks by January 14th?
If you don't provide the required information by January 14th, then your payouts might be put on hold, and you might be unable to accept payments starting January 15.
What should I do if I am unable to provide the required information?
If you're unable to provide the information requested, then you can contact Shopify Support to review any alternative means of verifying your information.
Will I be notified if there are issues with my verification documents?
Yes. If there are issues with your documentation, then you receive an email outlining what is required to complete the verification.
How often will I need to update my verification information?
As regulatory requirements evolve globally, our onboarding requirements might change. There is no fixed schedule for these changes. As per Shopify Payments terms of service, it is your responsibility to ensure that information on your account is accurate, and up to date.
Was there a change to the verification due date?
Yes. The due date was changed to January 14th to give you more time to action the verification tasks, and to avoid any unexpected disruptions to your payouts or checkout.
