Combined listings

Use the Combined Listings app to combine products into an enhanced product listing on your online storefront.

A combined listing is a product type created by connecting separate products from your store into a single product listing. Combined listings are connected by a shared option, such as color, model, or dimension. The products in a combined listing display as variants on your online storefront, but can contain additional product details not usually available at the variant level, such as a title, description, unique URL, or image gallery.

A combined listing has both a parent product (the main combined listing) and child products (the individual products included in the listing). When viewing a combined listing in your Shopify admin or online store, the combined listing options are displayed at the top of the product details page.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for the Shopify Combined Listings app, your store must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be on either a Plus or enterprise commerce plan.
  • Your store must be using the Online Store sales channel.
  • To display combined listings on your storefront, you must have a compatible theme.

Theme eligibility requirements

Combined listings display on free Shopify themes in version 15.0.0 or later.

For all other themes, your theme code might require additional customization to display combined listings on your storefront. You can find instructions for updating your theme code in the developer documentation for supporting high-variant products. If you need help with making changes to your theme, then contact your theme's developer for support.

If you're not sure whether your theme is compatible, then you can contact your theme's developer for support.

Incompatibility considerations

Certain features and apps are either incompatible with the Combined Listings app, or prevent certain options within the Combined Listings app from working as expected. Review the following considerations:

  • Combined listings only display on your online storefront.
  • A combined listing can't be added as a featured product on your online store.
  • Child products might display as a product recommendation for different child products that share a combined listing.
  • Apps that display information on product pages in your online store might not be compatible with combined listing product pages. You can preview the combined listing product page before publishing it to test app compatibility.
  • Combined listings can't be added to a product bundle or added as a subscription product.
  • When filtering product options with the Shopify Search & Discovery app, the child products of a combined listing won't be included in the filter results.

Identifying combined listings

Combined listings are displayed in the Products section of your Shopify admin as a unique product listing separate from its child products.

You can identify combined listing products in the following areas of your Shopify admin:

  • In the Products section, the Inventory column displays Combined listings with XX variants for a combined listing.
  • A combined listing and its child products display the Combined Listings app block on the product details page.
  • The Variants section of a combined listing parent and its child products product details page have the following differences from a regular product:
    • The Variants section of the product details page displays the options and option values added from the Combined Listings app. You can click Edit with Combined Listings to edit the combined listing options in the Combined Listings app.
    • The child product's variants are displayed separately, and can be edited from the product details page or variant details page.

Creating a combined listing

To create a combined listing, group your products by a shared option, such as size or color. For example, you sell shoes on your online store in different colors and sizes. You can add Size as an option to each product that you want to add to the combined listing, and then can add a Color option to the combined listing:

Considerations for creating a combined listing

Certain features are either incompatible with the Combined Listings app, or prevent certain options within the Combined Listings app. Review the following considerations before creating a combined listing.

Considerations for combined listing options

Review the following considerations for combined listing options:

  • All option names in a combined listing parent and child must be unique. For example, if the products that you want to add to the listing already have an option named Color, then don't add an option named Color to the combined listing.
  • Combined listing parent options are added separately from, and in addition to, any existing variant options in the child products.
  • An option value can't be empty.
  • Each option value must be unique.
  • You can manually enter values for each option, or connect category metafields to populate your combined listing option values. Learn more about using category metafields in the Combined Listings app.

Considerations for adding child products to a combined listing

Review the following considerations for adding child products to a combined listing:

  • Products can be included only in one combined listing at a time. If a product is already in a combined listing, then it can't be added to another combined listing. You can create a new product, or remove the product from the existing combined listing, and then add it to another combined listing.
  • Only an existing product can be added to a combined listing. You must add or update your products before you can add them to a combined listing.
  • A combined listing can't be added as a child product of another combined listing.
  • If you duplicate a combined listing product, then it's created as a regular product.

Combined listing maximum values

Combined listings have the following maximum values:

  • A combined listing can have a combined maximum of 2,000 variant option values across all child products.
  • You can add up to 60 products to a combined listing.
  • You can add up to 3 options to a combined listing, in addition to the options in each product included in the listing.

Category metafields in the Combined Listings app

If you've added a category to your child product details, then you can connect that category metafield in the Combined Listings app to populate options and option values for your combined listing.

Review the following considerations when connecting metafield categories to your combined listing:

  • Category metafields can be connected only if at least one child product has a category assigned.
  • If a child product has more than one entry in a category metafield, then only the first value will connect to the combined listing option value automatically.
  • Changing a category metafield in your combined listing doesn't update the category metafield in your child product.
