Shopify Audiences privacy

By enabling Shopify Audiences, you agree to contribute certain store and customer data to the audience network that all participating Shopify merchants contribute to. Data from orders placed on your store over a rolling 90 day period is used to support audience creation. This collective data is used to to develop an audience of potential customers (collectively “Audiences”). No merchant has access to the personal information or statistics of the buyers included in Audiences, except for the customer data they contribute. If you want to stop sharing this data, then turn off data sharing.

Audiences that you export from your Shopify admin to a third-party advertising platform, such as Facebook, are encrypted and transmitted securely. Exported Audiences can't be downloaded from Facebook. Facebook uses the data that's transmitted to match their records, and then deletes the data.

It's important that you add and display a privacy policy on your online store that clearly outlines your use and disclosure of personal information and the right to opt out of data sharing. Customer opt-out

To help comply with the California Consumer Privacy Act, any individuals who have opted out of the sharing of their personal data with third-parties are excluded from Audiences.

If you use the Customer Privacy app and a customer opts out of the sharing of their personal data, then the opt-out is synced to the Shopify Audiences app for that merchant. The customer will be excluded from newly created Audiences for that merchant.

Manually exclude a customer from Shopify Audiences

If you use a third-party privacy app or a customer contacts you to opt out of sharing their personal data, then you need to manually exclude the customer in the Shopify Audiences app.


  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Apps.

  2. In the Installed apps section, click the Shopify Audiences app.

  3. Click Member privacy.

  4. In Audience member email, enter the email of the customer that you want to opt out.

  5. Click Submit.

A customer that you manually exclude isn't removed from Audiences that have already been created, but their data is no longer shared or included in new Audiences.

Turn off data sharing

You can turn off data sharing in the Shopify Audiences app.


  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Apps.

  2. In the Installed apps section, click on the Shopify Audiences app.

  3. Click Settings.

  4. In the Data contribution section, click Turn off.

To resume creating and exporting new Audiences, turn data sharing back on.
