Cash drawers for Shopify POS

You can accept cash payments in your retail store and provide another way for customers to buy your products. If you accept cash for purchases in your retail store, then you might need a secure and reliable cash drawer. A cash drawer lets you securely store any physical currency you accept in your store and keep track of money received from customers.

Requirements

To use this hardware with your Shopify store, you need to meet the following requirements:

• the Shopify POS app
• a compatible iPad that is running iOS 15 or higher, an iPhone that is running iOS 15 or higher, or a compatible Android device that is running version 10 or higher

Note

If you want the cash drawer to open automatically after a transaction, then you will also need a compatible receipt printer.

Installing the cash drawer

Connect the cash drawer to the receipt printer using the cash drawer cable provided. The larger end of the cable plugs into the cash drawer, and the smaller end of the cable plugs into the receipt printer.

Opening the cash drawer

You can open the cash drawer manually using the included keys, or wirelessly from your iPad, iPhone, or Android tablet. The device connects to the cash drawer through the receipt printer, and the cash drawer opens automatically after each sale, or if you tap Go to cart > More actions > Open drawer from the Shopify POS app.

Note

You must connect the cash drawer to the same wireless network as your printer.

Test the connection to the cash drawer

When you've set up your receipt printer and your cash drawer, you can check that the connection between them is working.

Steps:

1. From Shopify POS, tap ≡, and then tap Settings.
2. Tap Manage connected hardware.
3. Tap the printer that you want to test.
4. Tap Test cash drawer.

Common issues

To avoid common problems, make sure your printer is set up correctly in the following ways:

• the cash drawer's cable is plugged into the receipt printer
• the receipt printer has paper
• the receipt printer is properly paired with the iPad, iPhone, or Android tablet. The pairing instructions for your receipt printer depends on which reciept printer model you have.

• you're using the cash drawer cable that you received in the hardware package to connect the cash drawer to the printer.

  If you tap No Sale on the products and cart screen and the cash drawer doesn't open, then this is likely a problem with the cash drawer cable. Contact our support team.
