Customer metafields in Shopify POS
You can create customer metafields from your Shopify admin, and then you can add or remove customer metafields from your Shopify POS. In the Shopify POS app, only pinned customer metafields are displayed, and they're available only at POS Pro locations.
Customer metafields can be used to save customer specifications and other customer details. This gives you and your staff a single reference for all of your customer information.
Metafields can be tailored to meet your store's needs. For example, if you give discounts on your customers' birthdays, then you can create a Birthday
metafield, so staff know when to give discounts. If you have a tiered loyalty program, then you can pin the Loyalty status
metafield created by your loyalty platform to track which tier each customer is on.

Considerations for using customer metafields in Shopify POS
Before you start using customer metafields in Shopify POS, review the following considerations:
- A maximum of 20 pinned customer metafields display on the customer details page.
- Third-party apps need to have Read or Write access to display their metafields in the Shopify POS app.
- To view and edit metafields, your staff needs to have the Add Customer and Manage Customer permissions in the Shopify POS channel in your Shopify admin.
The following metafield types don't display in Shopify POS:
- JSON
- Rich text
- Page
- Mixed references
- Collections
- Metaobjects
View customer metafields
You can view metafields in the Shopify POS app. To view metafields, you need to have internet connection.
Steps:
- From the Shopify POS app, tap Customers in the navigation bar.
- To find the customer you want to view metafields for, tap the magnifying glass icon and type their name in the search bar, or find them in the All customers list.
- Next to the customer name, tap the i icon to view the customer details screen.
- Next to the Customer metafields heading, tap View all.
Add customer metafields
You can add customer metafields to existing and new customer profiles in the Shopify POS app.
Steps:
- From the Shopify POS app, tap Customers in the navigation bar.
- Add customer metafields to an existing or a new customer profile:
- To add metafields to an existing customer profile, type the customer's name or email in the search bar, and then tap the customer.
- To add metafields to a new customer profile, tap the '+' icon and add the customer's details.
- In the Metafields section, tap View all.
- Tap the metafield to open the list of metafield options. If your metafield requires numbers, such as a birthday or tax ID, then a number pad displays.
- Tap Save.
Remove customer metafields
You can remove customer metafields from customer profiles in the Shopify POS app.
Steps:
- From the Shopify POS app, tap Customers in the navigation bar.
- In the search bar, type the name of the customer that you want to remove customer metafields from.
- In the search results, tap the customer.
- In the Metafields section, tap View all.
- Tap the metafield that you want to remove, and then tap the backspace on your keyboard until the textfield is empty.
- Tap Save.
