Saving and retrieving a Shopify POS cart

If your customer needs to leave before completing their purchase, but they want to come back, then you can save the cart as a draft order to be completed later. Saving the cart lets you continue with other orders without losing the details of the current cart. When the customer returns, you can retrieve the cart using Shopify POS.

You can use the Orders tab in Shopify POS to access saved draft orders.

Save the cart for later retrieval

If your customer is at checkout but needs to leave before completing their purchase, such as if they want to purchase another item, make a phone call, or visit an ATM, then you can save the cart as a draft order. During the time that customer is away, you can take other orders. When the customer returns, you can open their saved draft order and finish the sale.

Steps:

  1. From the Cart screen, tap .
  2. In the Cart section, tap Save as draft order.
  3. Optional: Add a customer profile to the cart.
  4. Tap Save to save the cart as a draft order.

You can retrieve this cart when you're ready to continue with the order. Draft orders can be accessed by other Shopify POS devices, and locations.

You can complete new transactions in the meantime.

Retrieve a draft order

You can retrieve any draft order created at your current location, as well as drafts from other locations, or drafts created in your Shopify admin. For example, if you created a draft order for a customer online, then the customer decided to come into the store to complete the order, you can retrieve that draft order and complete the purchase from your Shopify POS.

After you retrieve the draft order, you can complete the checkout, edit or delete the draft order, or email the cart to the customer.

Steps:

  1. Tap Orders > All orders and then select Drafts.
  2. Optional: To retrieve a draft from another channel or location, adjust the following filters:
    • Tap Channel: POS, and then select Channel: Admin to retrieve orders created in your Shopify admin.
    • Tap the Location: filter, and then select a different location to retrieve orders from other locations.
  3. Tap the draft order that you want to retrieve.
  4. Complete any of the following actions:

If there are unretrieved carts at the end of the day, then you can email the cart to the customer.

Edit a draft order

You can edit and save the details of a draft order on Shopify POS. For example, if you save a customer's cart because they need to leave before completing their purchase but when they return and they want to add other items, then you can edit the draft order before your customer completes the purchase.

Steps:

  1. Tap Orders > All orders and then select Drafts
  2. Tap the draft order that you want to edit.
  3. Tap Edit or check out.
  4. You can edit the order by adding, removing, or changing the quantity of products in the draft order.
  5. Optional: If you need to save the draft order again, then tap the trash can icon > Save changes.
  6. Optional: After you have finished editing the draft order, your customer can complete the purchase.

Delete a draft order

You can delete any draft order created at your current location, as well as drafts from other locations, or drafts created in your Shopify admin.

Steps:

  1. Tap Orders > All orders and then select Drafts.
  2. Optional: To retrieve a draft from another channel or location, adjust the following filters:
    • Tap Channel: POS, and then select Channel: Admin to retrieve orders created in your Shopify admin.
    • Tap the Location: filter, and then select a different location to retrieve orders from other locations.
  3. Tap the draft order that you want to edit.
  4. Tap Delete draft order.
  5. In the modal, tap Delete draft order to confirm and delete the draft.
