Saving and retrieving a Shopify POS cart
If your customer needs to leave before completing their purchase, but they want to come back, then you can save the cart as a draft order to be completed later. Saving the cart lets you continue with other orders without losing the details of the current cart. When the customer returns, you can retrieve the cart using Shopify POS.
You can use the Orders tab in Shopify POS to access saved draft orders.

Save the POS cart for later retrieval
If your customer is at checkout but needs to leave before completing their purchase, then you can save the cart as a draft order. During the time that customer is away from checkout, you can take other orders. When the customer returns, you can open their saved draft order and finish the sale.
To quickly save a cart as draft order, you can add the Save as draft tile to your Shopify POS smart grid.
Steps:
- From the Shopify POS app Cart screen, tap
, and then tap Save as draft.
- Optional: In the Add customer to draft dialog, add a customer profile to the cart or click Skip to skip this step.
- Tap Save to save the cart as a draft order.
You can retrieve this cart when you're ready to continue with the order. Draft orders can be accessed by other Shopify POS devices, and locations.
You can complete new transactions in the meantime.
Retrieve a draft order on Shopify POS
You can retrieve any draft order created at your current location, as well as drafts from other locations, or drafts created in your Shopify admin. For example, if you created a draft order for a customer online, then the customer decided to come into the store to complete the order, you can retrieve that draft order and complete the purchase from your Shopify POS.
After you retrieve the draft order, you can complete the checkout, edit or delete the draft order, or email the cart to the customer.
To quickly retrieve draft orders, you can add the Save as draft tile to your Shopify POS smart grid. When there's no active cart, the tile defaults to Load draft.
Steps:
- From the Shopify POS app, tap Orders > Drafts.
- Optional: To retrieve a draft from another channel or location, adjust the following filters:
- Tap Channel: POS, and then select Channel: Admin to retrieve orders created in your Shopify admin.
- Tap the Location: filter, and then select a different location to retrieve orders from other locations.
- Tap the draft order that you want to retrieve.
- Complete any of the following actions:
- Tap + Load to cart to edit the draft order or complete the checkout.
- Email the cart to the customer.
- Delete the draft order.
If there are unretrieved carts at the end of the day, then you can email the cart to the customer.
Edit a draft order on Shopify POS
You can edit and save the details of a draft order on Shopify POS. For example, if you save a customer's cart because they need to leave before completing their purchase but when they return and they want to add other items, then you can edit the draft order before your customer completes the purchase.
To quickly accept changes to updated draft orders, you can add the Save as draft tile to your Shopify POS smart grid. When there's changes to an active draft cart, the tile defaults to Update draft.
Steps:
- From the Shopify POS app, tap Orders > Drafts.
- Tap the draft order that you want to edit.
- Tap + Load to cart.
- You can edit the order by adding, removing, or changing the quantity of products in the draft order.
- Optional: If you need to save the draft order again, then tap
> Update draft.
After you finish editing the draft order, your customer can complete the purchase as usual.
Delete a draft order on Shopify POS
You can delete any draft order created at your current location, as well as drafts from other locations, or drafts created in your Shopify admin.
Steps:
- From the Shopify POS app, tap Orders > Drafts.
- Optional: To retrieve a draft from another channel or location, adjust the following filters:
- Tap Channel: POS, and then select Channel: Admin to retrieve orders created in your Shopify admin.
- Tap the Location: filter, and then select a different location to retrieve orders from other locations.
- Tap the draft order that you want to delete.
- Tap Delete draft.
- Tap Delete draft to confirm and delete the draft.
Add admin discounts to draft orders on Shopify POS
You can add discounts that were created in the admin to draft orders on Shopify POS. To add admin discounts to draft orders, staff members need the Manage draft orders at all locations and Discounts permission. If a staff member doesn't have the correct permissions to add admin discounts to draft orders, then they can still process the order, but the discount is removed from checkout.
If the Automatic discounts setting is turned off in > Discounts, then any automatic discount is removed from the draft order.
Steps:
- From the Shopify POS app, tap Orders > Drafts.
- Tap the draft order that you want to edit.
- Take one of the following steps to apply an admin discount to a draft order:
- Tap the Apply discount tile on the smartgrid, and then tap Discount code.
- Tap your discount specific smart grid tile.
- Tap
> Apply discount code.
- Type in a discount code that was created in the admin and then tap Save.
