Converting to multi-origin shipping profiles

Depending on how your store is set up, you might need to convert it before you can use multi-origin shipping profiles and charge product-based shipping rates.

If your store does not have multi-origin shipping profiles, then you can't create custom shipping profiles or create location-specific shipping rates.

Before you begin

There are a number of considerations you should be aware of before you convert your store to multi-origin shipping profiles.

Multi-origin shipping profiles and multiple locations

If you haven't activated multiple location inventory and you want to use multi-origin shipping in your admin, then you need to convert your store to one that tracks inventory at those multiple locations. For more information about this process, refer to Converting to multiple locations.

Apps that control and edit shipping rates in the Shopify admin

Some shipping apps offer similar features as shipping profiles, such as per-product shipping rates, shipping rate merging, or offering discounts. Each shipping app integrates with shipping profiles differently. Contact the developers of any shipping app that you use to learn how to integrate the app with multi-origin shipping profiles.

Multiple locations for online order fulfillment

If you have more than one active location fulfilling online orders, then your orders are split for fulfillment in the checkout based on product inventory levels.

When the products in an order need to be shipped from different locations, or are part of different shipping profiles, a shipping or delivery fee is calculated for each item and then each shipping fee is added together. The customer is shown only the final shipping cost at checkout. For more information on how rates are added together, refer to Combined rates at checkout.

No locations for online order fulfillment

If you have no active locations that fulfill online orders, then you can't enable multi-origin shipping. To change whether your locations can fulfill online orders, refer to Setting up your locations.

Step 1: Decide whether to convert your store

You can choose if or when you want to start using multi-origin shipping profiles for your store. You don’t need to convert right away.

Consider converting to multi-origin shipping profiles if you run your store in the following ways:

  • You have multiple retail locations or places where you fulfill orders.
  • You ship online orders from either one or multiple locations, including fulfillment services.

Step 2: Convert from single-origin to multi-origin shipping profiles

If you decide to convert your store from single-origin to multi-origin shipping profiles, then follow these steps to convert your store.

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Settings > Shipping.

  2. In the Shipping profiles section, click Manage rates.

  3. In the Shipping from section, click Activate multi-origin shipping.

  4. Click Continue.

  5. Click Save to create your new shipping profile.

  6. Click Save to confirm the activation of multi-origin shipping.
