Scan your inventory using the Shopify app

You can use the inventory scanner to scan product barcodes and manage your store's inventory on your mobile or tablet device in the following ways:

  • assign a product barcode to an existing product in your online store
  • increase your product inventory quantity by one
  • adjust or set product inventory level

Considerations for using the inventory scanner

Before you start using the inventory scanner, review the following considerations:

  • Inventory scanner works only on iOS, iPadOS, and Android devices.
  • You need to have the Shopify app installed on your mobile or tablet device.

Error messages during inventory scanning

You might get the following error messages when scanning your barcodes:

  • Stock item at current location? - The barcode is assigned to a product, but isn't stocked at the current location. Tap Stock item to stock the product at the current location.
  • Not tracking inventory - The barcode is assigned to a product that is stocked at the current location, but is set to not have inventory tracked. If applicable, then tap Edit product to set up inventory tracking for the product.
  • Barcode assigned to multiple products - The barcode is assigned to multiple products. Tap View items to either adjust the inventory manually or assign a different barcode to a product.
  • Select product to apply barcode? - The barcode isn't assigned to any product. Tap Select to assign the barcode to a product.

Assign a product barcode to an existing product

You can scan a product barcode, and then assign the barcode to an existing product in your online store.

Steps:

iOS
  1. From the Shopify app, go to Products.
  2. Tap Inventory scanner.
  3. Optional: Select your inventory location.
  4. Scan your product's barcode.
  5. Tap Select.
  6. Select a product that you want to assign the new barcode.
  7. If your product already has a barcode, then tap Replace barcode.
  8. Tap Review scan.
  9. Tap Apply changes.
Android
  1. From the Shopify app, go to Products.
  2. Tap Inventory scanner.
  3. Optional: Select your inventory location, and then tap CONFIRM LOCATION.
  4. Scan your product's barcode.
  5. Tap Select.
  6. Select a product that you want to assign the new barcode.
  7. If your product already has a barcode, then tap Replace barcode.
  8. Tap Review scan.
  9. Tap Apply changes.

Increase product inventory quantity by one

If you want to increase your product inventory quantity by one, then you can scan a product barcode that's assigned to a product in your online store.

Steps:

iOS
  1. From the Shopify app, go to Products.
  2. Tap Inventory scanner.
  3. Optional: Select your inventory location.
  4. Scan your product's barcode.
  5. Tap Review scan.
  6. Tap Apply changes.
Android
  1. From the Shopify app, go to Products.
  2. Tap Inventory scanner.
  3. Optional: Select your inventory location.
  4. Scan your product's barcode.
  5. Tap Review scan.
  6. Tap Apply changes.

Adjust product inventory quantity

If you want to adjust your product inventory quantity, then you need to scan a product barcode that's assigned to a product in your online store, and then adjust the inventory quantity of your product.

For example, you can adjust your product inventory quantity from 300 to 500.

Steps:

iOS
  1. From the Shopify app, go to Products.
  2. Tap Inventory scanner.
  3. Optional: Select your inventory location.
  4. Scan your product's barcode.
  5. Tap your product.
  6. Tap the inventory quantity number.
  7. Tap + or - to adjust the available inventory quantity of your product or tap the quantity number and edit the number.
  8. Optional: Tap Edit On hand to adjust the on hand quantity.
  9. Tap Save.
  10. Tap Review scan.
  11. Tap Apply changes.
Android
  1. From the Shopify app, go to Products.
  2. Tap Inventory scanner.
  3. Optional: Select your inventory location.
  4. Scan your product's barcode.
  5. Tap your product.
  6. Tap the inventory quantity number.
  7. Tap + or - to adjust the available inventory quantity of your product or tap the quantity number and edit the number.
  8. Optional: Tap Edit On hand to adjust the on hand quantity.
  9. Tap .
  10. Tap Review scan.
  11. Tap Apply changes.
