Registration-based tax settings
Registration-based taxes are available for certain regions only. This guide applies to you if your store is based in one of the following regions:
- United States
- Canada
- European Union
- United Kingdom
- Norway
- Switzerland
- Australia
- New Zealand
- Singapore - as of September 8, 2023
Registration-based taxes require you to input a tax registration number to calculate your taxes. You can get this number from your local tax authority.
Refer to the following resources regarding tax set-up:
- If you're new to Shopify, then refer to Setting up taxes.
- If you already use Shopify, then refer to Switching to registration-based taxes.
- If you want information about how Brexit affects your business, then refer to UK taxes and Brexit.
You can use Shopify to automate charging taxes, but you can't use Shopify to remit or file your taxes for you. After you review the regions where you sell your products and determine where you're responsible for charging taxes, then you can follow this guide to make sure that you've configured your Shopify store to charge the correct rates.
