Two-step authentication using SMS text messages

You can set up your mobile device to receive a one-time six-digit code that's sent in an SMS text message to your mobile device when you log in to your account. You'll need to manually enter this code in addition to your other credentials.

Caution

The other methods of two-step authentication provide greater security for your account. Consider only using SMS text messages as form of two-step authentication if you have no other method available to you.

Tip

If you don't want to rely on a mobile device, then you can have an additional built-in authenticator option that connects to the authentication method used for your computer, such as PIN, Touch ID, or Windows Hello.

It's also safer to activate an additional method of two-step authentication as a backup method when using built-in authenticator options.

Activate two-step authentication using SMS text messages in Shopify

1. From your Shopify admin, click your store name in the topbar.

2. Click Manage account > Security.

3. In the Two-step authentication section, click Turn on two-step.

4. Enter your password, and then click Next.

5. From the Authentication method list, select SMS delivery.

6. Select a country code, and then enter your phone number.

7. Click Send authentication code.

8. Check your mobile phone for an SMS text message.

9. Retrieve the six-digit code from the text message, and then enter it under CHECK YOUR PHONE.

10. Click Turn on.

11. Optional: Create a backup authentication method that you can use in case your primary authentication method is unavailable.

12. Save your recovery codes in case you're unable to use your primary or backup authentication method. Make sure that you store or save the recovery codes in multiple ways, including the following examples:

    • in a local file on your mobile device, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer
    • in a password manager platform, such as LastPass or 1Password
    • in a cloud storage location that you use
    • on a printed or handwritten document

Now when you try to log in, you require your mobile phone for two-step authentication.

You can add one or more different phone numbers as a backup authentication method.

Update your phone number for two-step authentication using SMS text messages in Shopify

If the phone number you're using for two-step authentication using SMS text messages has changed, then you can update it from your Shopify admin.

Steps:

1. From your Shopify admin, click your store name in the topbar.

2. Click Manage account > Security.

3. In the Two-step authentication section, click Remove next to the SMS Delivery method containing the phone number you want to change.

4. Enter your password, and then click Next.

5. Follow the steps for activating two-step authentication using SMS text messages in Shopify and add your new phone number.
