Understanding your Shopify billing and Shopify Bill Pay FAQ
This FAQ will help you understand various aspects of Shopify billing, including how to find, manage, and understand your bills, as well as provide insights into the Shopify Bill Pay service (available to merchants in the United States only).
General billing FAQ
Where can I find my Shopify bills?
You can find your bills on the Billing page in your Shopify admin.
What currency are Shopify bills issued in?
For accounting reasons, most Shopify bills are charged in US dollars. Merchants in certain countries might be billed in their local currency.
What are the common charges on my Shopify bill?
Common charges on your Shopify bill include the following items:
- subscription fees
- app charges
- shipping charges
- transaction fees (if you're not using Shopify Payments)
- charges for one-time purchases such as domains or themes
How do I get a detailed breakdown of my bill?
You can export bills in CSV or PDF format for a detailed breakdown of your charges.
What is a billing threshold?
A billing threshold is a dollar value that, when exceeded by the cost of your account activity, triggers an immediate bill. This usually involves third-party transaction fees and other outstanding charges. Monthly subscription fees aren't included in threshold bills.
Why was I billed before my regular billing cycle?
If you use a third-party payment provider and incur transaction fees, or have recurring app charges or other fees, then your store might be billed before your regular 30-day billing cycle. This is because the total of these charges exceeds your account's billing threshold.
What payment methods can I use to pay my Shopify bills?
Available payment methods vary by region, but generally include:
- Credit cards (Mastercard, Visa, American Express)
- Co-branded debit cards with international capabilities and recurring transaction setup
- Shopify Balance
- PayPal (restrictions apply in certain regions)
- ACH debits (for US-based Shopify Plus stores)
- SEPA direct debit (for stores in Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, or Switzerland on non-Plus plans using EUR)

- Contact your bank or financial institution for assistance with your payment method.
- Contact Shopify Support for further help.
How can I get faster payouts?
- For Shopify Payments: To speed up your payouts with Shopify Payments, you can adjust your payout schedule to the earliest available frequency. The pay period varies by region and usually ranges from 1 to 3 business days. Therefore, even with the fastest schedule, the clearance time for funds depends on your location. For precise details, review the pay period specifications on the Shopify Payment supported countries page for your country. Additionally, maintaining up-to-date account and banking information is crucial to avoid payout delays. For more information, refer to the getting paid article.
- For Shopify Balance: If your store uses Shopify Balance, then funds can be available in your Shopify Balance account as quickly as one business day after the transaction has been processed. This makes Shopify Balance an option for receiving your earnings faster. However, transferring funds from Shopify Balance to an external account may take up to 5 business days, plus any additional time your bank requires to process the transfer. For further details, learn more about eligibility requirements for Shopify Balance.
Does Shopify do instant payments?
- For Shopify Payments: Shopify Payments doesn't offer instant payouts. The processing time for payouts can vary depending on the region, typically ranging from 1 to 3 business days after the transaction date before funds are sent to your bank account. Payout schedules can be set according to your preference, but they are still subject to regional pay periods.
- For Shopify Balance: While Shopify Payments itself doesn't provide instant payouts, using Shopify Balance can speed up the process.
