Options for paying bills on Shopify

There are different types of bills that you can pay directly through your Shopify admin, and each bill can have slightly different payment options:

  • General bill payments: For general Shopify bills, such as subscription charges, you can choose from multiple payment methods. These include credit cards such as Mastercard, Visa, American Express, Diners Club, or Discover, co-branded debit cards, Shopify Balance, PayPal, ACH debits (for US-based stores on the Shopify Plus plan), or SEPA direct debit (for stores on non-Plus plans in Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland). The available payment methods vary depending on your region.
  • Shopify Shipping billing: When you purchase Shopify Shipping labels or adjust their prices, the charges are applied to the credit card registered with your Shopify account. All charges related to Shopify Shipping are processed in USD. The invoicing for shipping labels operates on a threshold billing system. This means that once your expenses for shipping labels reach a predetermined amount during your billing cycle, you're immediately invoiced and charged. To review your shipping label charges, go to the Bills section of the Billing page in your Shopify admin. Learn more about Shopify Shipping billing.
  • Shopify Bill Pay: If you want to pay external business bills directly through your Shopify admin and your store is in the United States, then you can use Shopify Bill Pay. It provides flexibility in payment options and consolidates your finances in one place. You can pay vendors, business phone bills, freelancers. For domestic payments, you can pay any bill by bank transfer, business credit or debit card, or your Shopify Balance account.

Remember, the payment options for your Shopify bill depend on your specific requirements and the type of bill you're paying.

Credit cards and co-branded debit cards

You can pay your Shopify bills (one-time or recurring) using a valid credit card from Mastercard, Visa, American Express, Diners Club, or Discover. Ensure that your credit card allows recurring payments.

You can also use a co-branded debit card with international capabilities and set up for recurring transactions. If you're unsure about your co-branded debit card's capabilities, then contact the financial institution that issued the card for assistance.

Considerations for using credit cards and co-branded debit cards

Review the following considerations for using credit cards and co-branded debit cards in specific countries and regions:

  • Australia: You can't use Diners Club credit cards or Discover credit cards to pay Shopify bills.
  • Brazil: If you're in Brazil, then you must use an international Visa or Mastercard, not a national one. Verify that your card is labeled as Internacional.
  • France: In France, you need to use a credit card or a deferred debit card to pay for your Shopify subscription. If you're unsure about your card type, then contact your bank.
  • India: Merchants in India can't use PayPal as a payment method for paying Shopify bills. This is to comply with the Reserve Bank of India's guidelines for the processing of recurring online payments. If you currently use PayPal, then you need to change your payment method to one of the accepted credit cards or co-branded debit cards.
  • Japan: JCB is a supported credit card for paying Shopify bills.
  • Singapore: You can't use Diners Club credit cards or Discover credit cards to pay Shopify bills.

Shopify Balance

If you have a Shopify Balance account, then you can use your Shopify Balance card as your preferred payment method for paying Shopify bills. No card details need to be entered.

PayPal

You can pay your Shopify bills (one-time or recurring) using PayPal. PayPal balance, bank accounts, debit cards, or credit cards associated with your PayPal account can be used for payment.

ACH debits

If you're based in the United States, your store is on the Shopify Plus plan, and have a USD bank account that accepts Automated Clearing House (ACH) debits, then you can verify your account as the primary payment method for Shopify bills. Contact your bank to confirm whether your account accepts ACH debits.

SEPA Direct Debit

For stores based in Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands or Switzerland, on a non-Plus subscription plan, and using EUR as the billing currency, you can pay Shopify bills using Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) Direct Debit. No credit or debit card is required.

Shopify Shipping label charges

Shopify Shipping labels and label price adjustments are charged to the credit card that's on file for your Shopify account. All Shopify Shipping charges are billed in USD.

Shipping label charges are based on threshold billing. When you spend a certain amount on shipping labels within your billing cycle, you're invoiced and charged immediately. You can continue purchasing labels until you reach 10% of your current threshold while waiting for the payment to be processed. After the invoice is processed, your threshold is reset.

If you don't reach the threshold within your billing cycle, then the shipping label charges are added to your monthly Shopify subscription bill.
