Available payment methods for managing your Shopify bills

When it comes to paying your Shopify bills, you have several payment methods available based on your region. If you need to change your billing information after reviewing these options, then refer to Managing your billing information.

Credit cards and co-branded debit cards

You can pay your Shopify bills, whether they're one-time or recurring, using valid credit cards from Mastercard, Visa, or American Express. It's important to ensure that your credit card allows for recurring payments. Alternatively, you can opt to use a co-branded debit card associated with Mastercard, Visa, or American Express. However, if you choose to pay with a co-branded debit card, then it must meet the following requirements:

  • The card must have international capabilities.
  • The card must be set up to accept recurring transactions.

If your co-branded debit card doesn't meet these requirements or if you're uncertain, then reach out to the financial institution that issued the card for further assistance.

Considerations for credit cards and co-branded debit cards

Review the following considerations for using credit cards and co-branded debit cards in specific countries and regions:

  • Brazil: If you're in Brazil, then you must use an international Visa or Mastercard, not a national one. Verify that your card is labeled as Internacional.
  • France: In France, you need to use a credit card or a deferred debit card to pay for your Shopify subscription. If you're unsure about your card type, then contact your bank.
  • India: Merchants in India can't use PayPal as a payment method for paying Shopify bills. This is to comply with the Reserve Bank of India's guidelines for the processing of recurring online payments. If you currently use PayPal, then you need to change your payment method to one of the accepted credit cards or co-branded debit cards.
  • Japan: In Japan, JCB is a supported credit card for paying Shopify bills.

Shopify Balance

If you have a Shopify Balance account, then you can use your Shopify Balance card to pay your Shopify bills. By setting your Shopify Balance virtual card as your preferred payment method, you can streamline the payment process without entering any card details.

PayPal

Another payment method for your Shopify bills is PayPal. Whether it's a one-time payment or a recurring charge, PayPal allows you to use your PayPal balance, bank accounts, debit cards, or credit cards linked to your PayPal account.

Considerations for PayPal

Review the following considerations for using PayPal in specific countries and regions:

  • Australia: You can use PayPal to pay your Shopify bills only when your billing currency is USD.
  • India: You can't use PayPal to pay your Shopify bills.
  • Japan: You can use PayPal to pay your Shopify bills only when your billing currency is USD.

ACH debits

For Shopify Plus plan stores in the United States with a USD bank account that accepts Automated Clearing House (ACH) debits, you can verify your account to serve as your primary payment method. Confirm with your bank whether your account supports ACH debits.

SEPA Direct Debit

If your store is based in Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands or Switzerland, operates on a non-Plus subscription plan, and uses EUR as the billing currency, then you can pay your Shopify bills using Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) Direct Debit. No credit or debit card required.
