Which payment methods are accepted for my Shopify bill?
You can pay for your Shopify bills (one-time or recurring) by using the following payment methods:
- a valid credit card from Mastercard, Visa, or American Express
- a debit card that is co‑branded with Mastercard, Visa, or American Express
- Shopify Balance in some regions
- PayPal in some regions
- SEPA Direct Debit in some regions
If you're in the United States and you're on the Shopify Plus plan, then you can use a verified bank.
Most of the fees charged by Shopify are recurring payments. Recurring payments occur on a regular cycle. These billing cycles vary and are not all in sync unless, for example, you start on a plan with 30-day billing and install all of your apps on the same day.
For more information, refer to Payment methods for your Shopify bills.
Why was my payment method rejected?
Check the following possibilities:
- Your payment method might be rejected if you aren't using a valid credit card from Mastercard, Visa, or American Express to pay your Shopify bills.
- If you use a debit card, then it must be co‑branded with Mastercard, Visa, or American Express. You can't use debit cards that are not co‑branded.
- Your credit card needs to allow for recurring payments in USD or in a supported local currency.
- If you're billed in USD and aren't located in the United States, then your credit card needs to have international capabilities.
- If you're billed in INR and using Razorpay, then your store and billing addresses must be in India.

What should I do if my payment method is rejected?
If your payment method is rejected and you are using a valid credit card from Mastercard, Visa, or American Express, then please contact your bank for assistance.
What should I do if my bill payment fails?
If your bill payment fails, then you can try it again by going to the Billing settings page and clicking Pay bill. If you need to update your payment method, then you can do so from the Billing settings page. If you continue to have issues processing the payment, then contact your bank for assistance.
How am I billed if I pick a Shopify subscription plan during my trial period?
If you pick a plan during your free trial, then you'll receive your first bill on the day that your free trial finishes. If your free trial already expired, then you'll receive your first bill on the day that you pick a Shopify subscription plan. The payment is taken automatically, so there isn't anything else that you need to do after picking a plan. Shopify bill charges show up on your credit card statement as: Shopify * <bill number>
.
How do I view or export all of my billing charges?
To view all of the charges within the past 90 days, you can view all charges in a specific time frame using the Statement of charges section of your Billing settings. To view data older than the past 90 days, you can export your billing history.
How do I get a refund on my Shopify billing charges?
Shopify does not provide refunds for plans, please refer to the Shopify Terms of Service for more information. Contact Shopify Support to resolve any billing errors.
If you need a refund on a charge from an app that you purchased from the Shopify App Store, then you can reach out to the app's developer directly.
Why am I being asked to authorize my payment?
You're asked to authorize your payment when it's requested by your bank. Occasionally, your bank might require additional authorization to process the payment of your Shopify Bill. When this occurs, you're sent a notification from your bank requesting approval for the payment, including a link to the bill that needs approval. To complete the approval, you might be redirected to a page outside Shopify.
Can I receive credit on my Shopify bill for referring other merchants to the platform?
Referrals and the Merchant Referral Program have been discontinued. If you pause or cancel your account, then any existing referral credits expire after 6 months. Refer to the Shopify Merchant Referral Program Policy for details.
Why did I get charged when I closed my Shopify account?
In addition to monthly subscription billing, your account also has a plan-based billing threshold. Billing thresholds are dollar values that trigger billing whenever the cost of your account exceeds its threshold amount. If you close your account before you reach your threshold, then the account closure prompts the system to charge you any pending bills automatically. If the charge is due to billing, then you can locate the 9-digit bill number. Shopify billing charges are displayed on your statement as: SHOPIFY * <9-digit bill number>
.
The charge might be from actioning a refund or incurring a chargeback.
