Managing your Shopify billing plan changes
On this page, you can find information on managing Shopify billing plan changes, including key billing considerations when upgrading or downgrading your Shopify billing plan.
Billing options for changing your Shopify plan
If you're looking to change your Shopify plan, then various options are available for immediate update. You can switch only to the plans that are currently available, as listed on Shopify's pricing page.
If you're on a discontinued plan, then you can't switch back to it after changing plans or pausing your store.
Billing implications of upgrading your plan
When considering an upgrade to your Shopify plan, it's important to be aware of the following billing details:
- Immediate billing: Upon upgrading your plan, you receive an immediate bill that covers only the subscription fee for your new plan.
- Pending charges: The immediate bill doesn't cover any outstanding charges on your account. These charges are added separately and billed after they exceed your billing threshold or at the close of your billing cycle.
- Instant activation: The features and changes associated with your new plan take effect immediately upon upgrade.
- Prorated adjustments: Billing adjustments for your new plan are prorated from the upgrade date. This means any difference in cost is calculated based on the number of days remaining in your billing cycle.
- Previous plan deductions: The cost of your previous plan is also prorated and subtracted from the total cost of your new plan during that month.
- Annual cycle considerations: If you switch to an annual billing cycle, then a new billing cycle starts. If your new plan has a lower subscription fee, then you receive a prorated bill reflecting this reduction.
- Shipping carrier information reset: If you switch from a monthly to an annual billing cycle on either the Basic or Grow plan, then your shipping carrier information resets. You need to re-enter this information for each shipping carrier.
Billing implications of downgrading your plan or changing your billing cycle
When considering a downgrade or a change to your billing cycle, it's important to be aware of the following billing details:
- Pre-paid plans: Your Shopify plan is pre-paid, meaning that any changes to a lower plan take effect at the end of your current billing cycle.
- End-of-cycle changes: Any modifications to your plan are implemented at the end of your current billing cycle, not immediately.
- Changing billing cycles: If you switch from an annual billing cycle to a monthly one, then the change takes effect at the end of your existing annual cycle.
- Shipping carrier information reset: If you switch from a monthly to an annual billing cycle on either the Basic or Grow plan, then your shipping carrier information resets. You need to re-enter this information for each carrier.
Examples:
- Changing to the Basic plan: If you want to downgrade to the Basic plan, then remember that the change won’t be immediate. You’ll stay on your current plan until the end of the billing cycle, and then the Basic plan will take effect.
- Changing to monthly payment cycle: If you request a change to a monthly payment cycle but are still being charged the annual amount, then make sure you understand that the switch occurs at the end of your current annual billing cycle. For example, if your annual billing cycle ends on October 31, then you will continue to notice the annual charge until that date. Additionally, switching from annual billing to monthly might result in the loss of features or benefits included with your annual plan. To initiate the switch to monthly billing, please contact Shopify Support before your annual cycle ends.
Required permissions for plan modifications
To modify your plan, either for an upgrade or a downgrade, the changes must be authorized by the store owner or a staff member with Manage plan permission.
Impact of upgrading during a free trial on your Shopify plan
If you upgrade your plan during a free trial, then it won't change the length of the trial or affect your store data. You won't be charged until your free trial ends. Learn more about trying Shopify with a free trial.
