Customer privacy settings

Online store visitor data collection settings have changed due to the ePrivacy Directive.

If you’re a merchant operating in or with customers from the EU, EEA (European Economic Area, which includes all EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway), UK, or Switzerland, then you need to collect customer consent before installing cookies or gathering data from the user. Cookies are stored on the customer's computer or mobile device, which means your online store is required to ask customers for their consent before we can load analytics cookies.

Customer privacy settings in Europe

Merchants in or selling to customers from the EU, EEA, UK, or Switzerland can choose between three options for how Shopify uses cookies to collect and store your visitors' data: Collected before consent, Partially collected before consent, and Collected after consent.

Options for online store data collection
Option Definition Impact
Collected before consent Data is collected before a customer gives consent. This may not meet applicable data protection and privacy laws, but has no impact on analytics and ad campaigns. No impacts to analytics or marketing data collection.
Partially collected before consent Analytics data collection is limited to the duration of a user session, and marketing data collection is blocked prior to customer consent. This option may impact analytics and marketing data, and analytics data collection can be reduced.

Selecting this option prompts you to install a privacy banner app.

Collected after consent (Recommended) Data is not collected until a customer gives consent. This may be required by applicable data protection and privacy protection laws, but may impact analytics and ad campaigns. Due to the potential of users declining to give permission to data collection, this option may impact analytics and marketing data. There can be a drop in the number of overall sessions. Other metrics that depend on accurate session counts for their calculation can also be affected, for example, conversion rate.

Selecting this option prompts you to install a privacy banner app.

Steps:

  1. In your Shopify admin, click Online Store and then click Preferences. Scroll down to the Customer privacy section.

  2. Choose the level of restrictions for European customers: Collected before consent, Partially collected before consent, or Collected after consent. Selecting partially collected before consent or collected after consent prompts you to install a privacy banner app. To learn more about customer privacy, cookies, and restriction levels, refer to the ePrivacy Directive documentation.

Customer privacy settings in California

Under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), customers in California have the right to opt out of the sale of their data. You can limit data collection for customers in California through the Customer privacy section in your Shopify admin, which will prompt you to install the Customer Privacy app for CCPA compliance.

Steps:

  1. In your Shopify admin, click Online Store and then click Preferences. Scroll down to the Customer privacy section.
  2. Limit data collection for customers in California by clicking Activate.
  3. Click the Install app button to download and install Shopify's Customer Privacy app.

Customer Privacy app

With Shopify's Customer Privacy app, you can gather data collection consent from online store visitors to comply with regulations such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) or the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). You can use the Customer Privacy app to help you accomplish the following tasks:

  • Build trust with customers by adding a banner that lets visitors choose if they want to accept cookies or not.
  • Use templates that have privacy requirements for different regions pre-filled.
  • Easily select and edit the privacy message that you want published on your storefront.

The Customer Privacy app is a free app that you can add from the Shopify app store. You can also use any of the approved third-party privacy banner apps found on the Shopify app store.
