Descriptions of user roles

If your store is on the Shopify Plus plan, then you can also create organization roles. Learn more about user roles for organizations.

There are two types of predefined roles available by default in your Shopify admin. You can assign users either of the following types of predefined user roles:

• System roles are predefined roles and can't be edited.
• Predefined roles are store roles that you can customize to suit your business needs.

You can also create new roles with the permissions that you need.

System roles

If your store is part of an organization, or is on the Shopify Plus plan, then you can also assign organization-level system roles to your users.

System roles are predefined roles that can't be edited. There are two types of system roles: owner system roles and administrator system roles. System roles are designed and maintained by Shopify, and aren't customizable.

The following two types of system roles are available for your store:

• Store owner.
• Administrator, which you can assign to users to manage high-level permissions for your organization.

Store owner

The Store owner role is specialized system role that's required for your store and assigned to you by default. This role has the highest level of permissions and has complete access to all features of your store. A store can have only one owner.

You can't assign the Store owner role to another user. To change the store owner, you can change ownership of your store.

Administrator

The Administrator role is a high-trust role that grants the following store permissions:

• View, create, edit, and delete all resources for the store, including finance resources.
• Access to all POS locations.
• User management, including the following permissions:
• View, create, edit, and delete users and roles.
• Assign and remove roles to users.

The Administrator role has the following permission limitations:

• Can't change ownership of a store
• Permission restrictions, such as the Restrict permissions to assigned company locations store permission, don't apply to this role.

Predefined user roles

Your store might have some predefined roles available that you can further customize.

Merchandiser	The Merchandiser role grants a user the following store-level permissions: Home All permissions in Products All permissions in Catalogs All permissions in Content All permissions in Files, except Delete
Marketer	The Marketer role grants a user the following store-level permissions: Home All permissions in Marketing All permissions in Customers
