Theme code customization tutorials

You can follow theme code customization tutorials to edit your theme code and make advanced changes to the design and behavior of your online store. Most of the files that make up a theme contain Liquid, Shopify's templating language. Theme files also contain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Edit the code for a theme only if you know HTML and CSS, and have a basic understanding of Liquid. We suggest hiring a Shopify Expert if you are not comfortable with following the steps in a tutorial.

Before you edit your theme code

Before you edit your theme code, it's a good idea to do the following tasks:

  • Check the settings for your theme in the theme editor. If there's a setting for the change that you want to make, then you don't need to edit your theme code.
  • Duplicate your theme to create a backup copy. This makes it easy to discard your changes and start again if you need to.
  • Make sure that you understand what level of support is available.
