Add order notes on your cart page

You can use order notes to collect special instructions from customers about how to prepare and deliver an order. You can enable a text box for order notes on your cart page in any free Shopify theme.

Tip

Order notes, cart attributes, and line item properties are three separate tools with similar functionality. Order notes let you capture special instructions on how to prepare and deliver an order. Cart attributes are custom form fields that you can use to collect additional information from your customers on the cart page. Line item properties are used to record customization information about specific products in an order. Line item properties are specified directly on the product page.

Order notes are referred to as cart notes in some themes.

Adding order notes

Order notes can be enabled in the Cart theme settings. Follow the steps below, or refer to your theme's documentation for more information about how to find this setting in your theme.

Note

If your screen is wider than 1600 pixels, then your customization and editing options appear on the right side of your screen. If your screen is smaller than 1600 pixels, then they appear on the left side.

Steps:

1. From your theme customization page, in the page selection drop-down menu at the top of the page, click Cart.
2. Click Sections in the left sidebar.
3. Under the Template section, click Subtotal.
4. Check or uncheck Enable cart note.
5. Click Save.

Edit your order notes label

You can edit the label that appears above or alongside the order notes box.

Desktop

1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.

1. Find the theme that you want to edit, and then click ... > Edit default theme content.

2. Click Sections. If you don't see the Sections label, then click the ... button, and then select Sections from the drop-down menu.

3. Scroll down to the Cart section. Enter the new order notes message in the Note field.

4. Click Save.
