Set up your domain with BigRock

    Bigrock my account

(You might need to log in at http://manage.bigrock.com/ instead.)

  2. Click your BigRock domain name.

From here, you can modify all your DNS records for your BigRock domain, including your:

Assigning the A record for your root domain

You need to modify the A record for your root domain so that instead of pointing at BigRock's IP address, it points to Shopify's IP address (23.227.38.32).

To modify the A record for your BigRock root domain:

  1. Open the DNS records for your BigRock domain.

  2. Click the A Records tab.

  3. Find your root domain in the list and click it.

  4. Click Modify Record.

  5. Complete the fields as follows:

    • leave the Name field blank (indicating a root domain)
    • in the Destination IPV4 Address field, type 23.227.38.32. (Shopify's IP address)
    • in the TTL field, type 720. (the smallest value allowed by BigRock.)

  6. Click Modify Record. When your A records list displays again, you'll see a message indicating that the record's been modified. You'll also see that the IP address for your root domain's been updated.

Caution

You might notice that BigRock assigns A records to both your root domain and a www. subdomain. It's best practice to have only a single A record, pointing your root domain at Shopify's IP address, and to use CNAME records to point all your subdomains at your-store-name.myshopify.com. For this reason, you should delete all A records for this domain's subdomains and leave just the A record for your root domain.

Deleting an A record

BigRock commonly assigns A records to subdomains. You should delete these and use CNAME records for your subdomains instead.

To delete a BigRock A record:

  1. Open the DNS records for your BigRock domain.

  2. Click the A Records tab.

  3. If you see a subdomain in the list, click it.

    Bigrock select record
  4. When the A record displays, click Delete Record.

    Bigrock delete record

Don't forget to define a CNAME record for this subdomain if you still use it.

Defining CNAME records for your subdomains

For every BigRock subdomain that you want to use, you need to set up redirection to your Shopify-hosted domain (your-store-name.myshopify.com).

You do this by editing the DNS records for your BigRock domain, to add a CNAME record for every one of your subdomains.

Note

Use this method if you want your online store to reside on a subdomain, such as store.your-bigrock-domain.com.

To set up a CNAME record:

  1. Open the DNS records for your BigRock domain.

  2. Click CNAME Records.

    Bigrock cname btn
  3. You'll see a list of the current CNAME records for this domain (if this is your initial setup, the list will probably be empty.) Click Add CNAME Record.

  4. Complete the fields as follows:

    • in the Host Name field, enter the prefix you want you use for your subdomain, for example www (don't enter the dot)
    • leave the first of the 2 Value fields blank
    • check the box next to the second Value field
    • in the second Value field, enter your Shopify-hosted domain name, for example your-store-name.myshopify.com
    • in the TTL field, type 720. (this is the minimum allowed by BigRock.)
    Bigrock add cname
  5. Click Add Record. You should see a message indicating that the record was added successfully.

    Bigrock cname success

Note

If the message indicates a resource record conflict, it means you've already assigned a pointer to this subdomain elsewhere. Chances are you forgot to delete a subdomain from your A records, so you should do this now, then try again.

If you want to add more subdomains, you can repeat this process at any time, to add as many CNAME records as you need.

Setting up email forwarding

BigRock.com gives you 2 email accounts with every domain you purchase from them. You can use these as your customer-facing email addresses, and forward mail from them on to your private email address.

BigRock provides several ways of managing email, but the simplest is to create a Forward Only account and have all your BigRock email sent straight on:

  1. From the BigRock home page, click My Account.

  2. Click your BigRock domain name.

    Bigrock admin
  3. Click Email.

    Bigrock email tab
  4. In the Email section, click Manage Email.

    Bigrock manage email btn
  5. In the list of Actions, click Add Forward Only Account.

    Bigrock forward mail btn
  6. When the Forward Only Account settings panel opens, complete the fields as shown in the table:

    In this field Type this

Forward to: Your private email address, for example your-name@gmail.com

    Here's an example:

    Bigrock forward forward to
  7. When you've entered the account settings, click Add Account. You should see a success message.

    Bigrock mail success

It's a good idea to send a mail to your BigRock email and check that it arrives in your private email account.

Setting your BigRock domain as your primary domain

If you want to, you can set your BigRock domain as your primary domain, from your Shopify store Admin.

Caution

If you are not able to edit your DNS records from within your domain provider's Admin section, it's likely that you have your domain's nameservers pointed to a third party. To resolve this issue, you must contact your domain provider to have them point your domain's nameservers to their default nameservers.
