Set up your domain with Google Domains

Buying a domain from Google is one of the easiest ways to start a Shopify store. You can sign up for a free Shopify trial at the end of the domain setup process.

You can also connect an existing Shopify account to a Google domain, so you can go straight to your Shopify admin from your Google account.

Did you know?

Google Domains is currently in a US-only beta phase. Google will announce the timeline for wider release at a later date.

Before you begin

Before getting started, you'll need to sign up for a free Google Account. You probably already have one if you use other Google products like Gmail, Youtube, or Google Drive etc.

Buying a domain from Google

To buy your domain name:

  1. Visit Google Domains

  2. In the Search for a domain name... box, type the domain name you want to use for your store.

    Google domains site
  3. Click the blue magnifying glass button to check if the domain is available.

  4. If the domain you want is not available, you'll be shown two types of suggestions:

    • the domain name you entered ending in a different, available extension (for example, .net instead of .com)
    • different available domains that contain part of your original search.

  5. If the domain you want is available, or if you find one you like in the suggested domain names, click Add to cart to continue.

  6. Next you can add more versions of this domain to your cart, continue shopping for other domains, or proceed to checkout.

  7. Review the contents of your Shopping cart, and click Proceed to checkout to begin your purchase:

    Google domains proceed to checkout
  8. Fill out the form to confirm your contact information. This is required by any domain registrar.

  9. At the bottom of the form, choose your privacy setting:

Choosing public means that anyone doing a whois query of your domain will be able to see the personal information that you enter into this form, including name and address.

Choosing private means that your domain is registered by proxy, so that a third-party company's details appear (rather than yours) when a whois query is run. Google makes no charge for this service (although some other providers do charge a fee for private registration).

  10. Click Continue to open the checkout.

  11. If this is your first time paying for something with Google, add a payment method, then click Accept and continue.

  12. Review the purchase a final time then click Buy.

You will receive a confirmation email from Google Domains containing information about your domain, and another email from Google Wallet with your order receipt from Google Inc.

Do more with your domain

When you buy a domain from Google Domains, the following configuration is done automatically:

  • your domain is pointed at your Shopify-hosted domain name, so there’s no need to edit your DNS records

FAQ

What do I get if I buy a Google domain?

If you buy a domain from Google Domains, you will:

  • be able to access your Shopify store through Google, which means no additional password to remember
  • get all your DNS settings configured automatically
  • be able to access your DNS settings to make optional changes (such as adding another subdomain)
  • be able to start a Shopify trial as part of the Google Domains signup process.

What if I already own another domain?

If you already own another domain, you don't have to move it to Google. You can continue to manage it as you always have.

Can I transfer a domain from a third-party provider into Google Domains?

Yes. Many people like hosting all their domains with one registrar. In addition, Google provides very easy to use domain management menus.

To get started:

  1. Go to your Google Domains registrar page.

  2. Click the Transfer in tab on the left:

    Google domains 16
  3. Type in the domain name that you wish to transfer into Google Domains and click Continue.

    Google domains 17
  4. Follow Google's 5 steps to transfer in your domain. The same steps are required no matter who your current domain registrar is.

Why would I add more versions of a domain?

It's possible that a malicious competitor might purchase a different version of your domain name (for example, .net instead of .com). You should buy all the versions of your domain that you're likely to need, to avoid competitors:

  • preventing you from buying other versions at a later date
  • selling them back to you at an exaggerated price
  • using their own website to confuse your customers
  • misrepresenting your brand.

Editing MX Records
