Setting up your domain is not something that you'll have to do often, but it's important that you set it up correctly the first time.
If you need help with your Shopify domain, then you can contact Shopify Support. If you need help with your third-party domain, then you should contact their support team. Shopify Support can't log in to your third-party domain account to make changes for you.
Get help with your Shopify domain
If you've purchased your domain through Shopify and are having problems setting it up, then contact Shopify Support.
When you purchase a domain through Shopify, your domain is registered through OpenSRS. Shopify configures the DNS settings for you, but you can update your domain contact information or change your DNS settings in Shopify.
If you are leaving Shopify and need to move your domain to another host, then you have to transfer your domain with OpenSRS.
Get help with your third-party domain
If you've purchased your domain from a third party provider, then you should contact their support team for help setting up the domain for your Shopify store. Our support will be more limited in helping you because every provider is different.
Shopify Support is not allowed to log in to your third-party domain account for you, even if you give us explicit permission.
What to tell your third-party provider
If you've tried setting up your third-party domain yourself and are still having problems, then you should contact your third-party provider for help.
Your provider is familiar with the terms related to domains. When you call your third-party domain provider for support, you can tell them that:
- you want your root domain (your A record) to point to Shopify's IP address, which is
- you want your subdomains (your CNAME records) to point to your Shopify-hosted domain, which is
If you want to set up email forwarding, then you can also tell your third-party provider that you want to use the their email client (if they have one) and need to configure your MX records.
