Getting started with Shopify

Welcome to Shopify!

The kinds of products that you sell and the way that your online store looks are two of the most important choices that you'll make for your business. Follow these tutorials to add your first product and see how your product looks on your online store. Next, customize your theme to suit your brand.

Click Start to begin. If you want to skip a step during setup, then click Skip. Any step that you skip can be completed later from your Shopify admin.

Click Save at any point when adding your first product to save and preview your work.

Add your first product

Steps:

  1. Enter a title for your product.

  2. Enter a description for your product. Describe your product in detail to help your customers to make a decision when shopping. Don't use a manufacturer's exact description, because you want your products to look unique to search engines.

  3. Add an image for your product. Click Upload image or drag an image file into the Images box to upload an image.

  4. Enter a price for your product. If you want to display a sale price for the product, then enter the sale price in the Compare-at price field. Check the Charge taxes on this product checkbox if needed.

  5. Enter a SKU (stock keeping unit) for your product. An SKU is a unique number that is used to identify a product. SKUs help you to organize your inventory and fulfill orders.

  6. Enter a barcode number for your product. The barcode that you enter needs to be a new or existing Global Trade Item Number (GTIN). GTINs are unique identifiers that are used internationally to store and locate product information. UPC, EAN, and ISBN numbers are examples of GTINs, which might vary in length depending on the product type. You can find the GTIN above or below the barcode on the packaging for your product.

If you don't have a GTIN for your product, then you can request it from the manufacturer. Learn how to get a GTIN for a product that you manufacture at the GS1 standards website. Do not invent false GTIN information for your products.

  7. If you want to set up inventory tracking for your product, then select Shopify tracks this product's inventory in the Inventory policy drop-down menu. Enter a quantity value for the number of products that you have in stock. Check the Allow customers to purchase this product when it is out of stock checkbox if you want your customers to be able to buy your product regardless of your current inventory stock.

  8. If your product requires shipping, then select Physical product in the Shipping section, and enter a shipping weight for your product.

If you want to ship your product internationally, then enter a harmonized system tariff code (HS tariff code). The tariff code provides customs with information so that internationally-agreed tariffs can be applied to the order. Click look up code to search for HS tariff codes. Learn more about HS tariff codes from the United States International Trade Commission's Harmonized Tariff Schedule.

  9. Select a fulfillment service from a list of the services used by your store. If you aren't using a fulfillment service, then select Manual.

  10. Click Add variant if your product has multiple versions, such as different sizes or colors. Enter an option name, for example Size, followed by option values, for example S, M, L, and XL. If you want to delete a variant option, then click the trash can button. To add another variant type, click Add another option.

  11. Review your search engine preview listing to see how your product will appear in search engine results. If you want to edit your listing, then click Edit website SEO. You can edit the Page title for your search engine result, as well as its Meta description and URL and handle.

  12. Choose the sales channels that you want your product to appear on. By default, your product will be visible on your online store. If you want to schedule when your product will appear on your store, then click the calendar button and enter a date and time for the product to be published.

  13. To help organize your inventory, add a product type for your product. Later, you can use product types to categorize your products in automatic collections.

  14. Add a vendor for your product. The vendor is the manufacturer or wholesaler that you use for the product. You can filter your products by vendor, which can speed up ordering inventory when you have multiple products.

  15. Add tags to describe your product. Tags are searchable keywords that are associated with your product. Tags can help your customers to find your product using your online store search.

  16. Click Save.

  17. Click Next.
