Using Adyen on Shopify

Adyen is a payment gateway available for enterprise-level businesses. The partnership between Adyen and Shopify provides access to the features of the Adyen payments platform through the Adyen payment gateway available on Shopify.

Key benefits and features of Adyen

Adyen offers a range of benefits and features that let you accept payments, protect revenue, and control your finances. The following are some of the key features of using Adyen on Shopify:

  • Integrated checkout: Adyen on Shopify adds the Adyen payment gateway directly into your Shopify store's checkout, letting customers complete their purchases in your branded checkout environment without being redirected to another website. This helps enhance the customer experience and reduce cart abandonment.
  • 3D Secure (3DS) challenges and authentication: Adyen uses 3DS 2.x to provide secure and reliable 3DS challenges and authentication. This helps protect your business from fraudulent transactions and provides an additional layer of security for your customers.
  • Wallets: The Adyen payment gateway currently supports Apple Pay and Google Pay wallets. You can integrate these wallets into your checkout process and provide additional payment options for your customers.
  • Subscriptions and vaulted payment methods: Adyen's payment gateway allows you to receive vaulted credit card information using any of the subscription apps on the Shopify platform so that you can process payments.

For more information, refer to the Get started with Adyen and configuring third-party payment providers guide.

Ineligible or incompatible features for using Adyen

While Adyen offers numerous benefits, there are certain features that are unavailable or incompatible with this integration:

  • Gift cards: Gift cards don't work with the Adyen on Shopify integration.
  • Local payment methods (LPMs): Not all local payment methods offered by Adyen are available through the Adyen on Shopify integration.
  • Fraud tools: While using Adyen on Shopify, you won’t have access to additional features offered on Shopify Payments, such as dispute management, card testing protection, and analytics. Adyen provides its own additional fraud tools, but they might cost an additional fee. However, you can still use Shopify's fraud analysis and Shopify Flow to set up custom rules.
  • Shopify Checkout: To use the Adyen on Shopify, you need to use Shopify Checkout. If you’re on the Shopify Plus plan, then you need to use Checkout Extensibility.

Integrating Adyen with your Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software

To limit data discrepancies, you can integrate Shopify, including Adyen's payments data, with your Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software. This integration ensures smoother data management and synchronization between your systems.

Adyen's compatibility with Markets

Adyen can be used with Shopify Markets to sell in local currencies. Transactions are processed in the currency sent by Shopify to Adyen when Shopify Markets is activated. You need to configure the currencies of your markets within Adyen. If the currency matches one of Adyen's settlement currencies for the region, then payouts are settled in that currency accordingly.

Subscriptions

Adyen on Shopify supports subscriptions. You can process and manage subscriptions within your Shopify store.
