Selling digital products or a service is easy on Shopify. By default, when you add a new product to your Shopify store, a requires shipping setting is enabled. You can disable that setting to tell Shopify you are not selling a physical product.

Digital Download Apps

To provide a download link to your customers for a digital product, you must use an app from Shopify's App Store. Shopify's Digital Downloads app is a free, easy-to-use solution that is supported by Shopify.

There are other third party apps as well that supported by their developers. Be sure to determine which digital download app best suits your needs.


Customers living in the EU must pay VAT on digital goods at the rate applicable in their own country regardless of where the seller is located. You must make sure your tax settings are correct to sell digital products to customers in the EU.

Disable shipping for a digital product

If you're selling a digital download product or a service, then you should disable shipping for that product, as nothing will be shipped to the customer.

Configure email templates

Once you have configured your product, you might want to customize your email templates to tell your customer more about the service so that they know what to expect with their order:

  • When selling a digital download, most digital download apps will send an email with a download link to your customer.
  • When selling a service, you should fully outline how the service works to ensure that your customers understand exactly what type of service you provide.
