Apple Airport WiFi extender
Supported Apple AirPort WiFi Extender models
The Apple AirPort WiFi Extender is the only router supported by Shopify for use with the Star Micronics receipt printer. You can use other routers, but our support for these is limited if you run into problems.
The following models are supported, provided that you're using Shopify POS with retail package:
- the second generation AirPort Express
- the latest version of the Airport Extreme (as of October 22, 2013).
Set up the Apple AirPort WiFi Extender
The instructions in this section are for the Apple AirPort Express, but the setup for the AirPort Extreme is similar. You'll find the most recent setup instructions for Apple AirPort WiFi Extenders here.
To set up the Apple AirPort Express:
Find a spot for your Apple AirPort Express within close reach of your receipt printer. Plug it into a power outlet to turn it on.
On your iPad home page, tap Settings and then Wi-Fi. Wait for your iPad to search and list nearby wireless networks (this might take a couple of minutes).
In the SET UP NEW AIRPORT BASE STATION... section, tap AirPort Express:
If you don't see the AirPort Express, try resetting the AirPort Express device back to its original settings. Use the end of a pen or a straightened paper clip to hold down the reset button on the back of the unit for a couple of seconds.
The AirPort Setup screen opens, and the AirPort Utility begins to gather information about your network:
When the next setup screen displays, you'll have the option of adding the AirPort to an existing network or creating an entirely new network for the AirPort.
To add your AirPort to an existing network, tap Other Options, then tap Next:
You should create a new network only if you're setting up your whole internet connection for the first time. If you have other AirPorts installed on this network, you might also see options for replacing them or restoring previous settings.
Look through the list of displayed networks to locate the one you want to join. Tap on it, then tap Next:
In the Device field, enter a recognizable name for your AirPort Express, and add a password to keep it secure.
Each of your passwords should be unique. Don't use the same password for more than one account, even if the accounts are related.
When you have finished, tap Next to move to the next screen:
Tap Save if you're prompted to save the password.
The AirPort Express configures itself based on your settings. When the setup is complete, a message indicates that the AirPort has joined your network. When you see this, tap Done:
You can use the Apple AirPort Utility to see a graphical representation of your AirPort network.
Use the Apple AirPort Utility
You can download the Apple AirPort Utility free of charge from the App Store. The Apple AirPort Utility provides a convenient, visual way to manage your networked Apple devices:
- View a graphical representation of your network
- Change the network settings for an Apple Airport
- Remove an AirPort from your network

Remove an AirPort from your network
You might want to remove an AirPort from your network if you need to install it on a different network nearby. To do this:
Open the AirPort Utility by tapping its icon on your iPad. You should see your AirPort on the network.
Hold down the reset button on the back of the AirPort for a few seconds (use a straightened paper clip or a pen). You'll see an alert icon next to its image on the AirPort Utility screen:
At this stage, you can install the AirPort on another network and re-install it on this one later, and the settings will be preserved.
To completely remove the uninstalled device from your network and delete the settings, tap on its image, then tap Forget:
