Selecting payment methods at the Shopify POS checkout

After you have finalized the customer's cart, you can accept payment from a variety of payment methods on the Select payment dialog. You can choose which payment methods appear on the Select payment dialog from the Shopify POS settings.

Select payment screen

The Select payment dialog appears after you tap the cart total from the Shopify POS products screen:

From the Select payment dialog, you can select any of the payment methods that you have enabled in your Payment types settings.

Cash payment

To accept payment by cash:

  1. From the Select payment dialog, tap Cash. By default, the correct amount of the order is entered.
  2. If the customer is not paying with exact cash, then you can enter the amount you're receiving in one of two ways:
    • Tap one of the suggested amounts below the Cash field.
    • Tap the Cash field to bring up the keyboard and enter the correct amount, and then tap Done.
  3. When you're ready to complete the order, tap Complete order.
  4. Decide whether to provide the customer with a receipt, and then tap Start new order to return to the Shopify POS products screen.

Swipe credit payment

To accept a credit payment with a supported swipe card reader:

  1. From the Select payment dialog, tap Credit.
  2. Swipe the customer's credit card as shown in the image on the screen:

  3. The customer authorizes the payment with their signature or PIN, depending the card type and which card reader you're using.
  4. Decide whether to provide the customer with a receipt, and then tap Start new order to return to the Shopify POS products screen.

Chip and tap credit payments

If you're using the Tap, Chip, and Swipe card reader, then you can accept contactless payments, which include tapped credit cards, Android Pay, and Apple Pay:

  1. From the Select payment dialog, tap Credit.
  2. Tap Start payment.
  3. Allow the customer to insert or tap their card:

    • If the customer is using a tap payment method, then they need to hold their contactless credit card or contactless device within 2.5 cm of the card reader until the four green lights have lit.
    • If the customer is using a chip credit card, then they need to insert the card into the card reader and follow its instructions.

    When Shopify POS displays a payment approved message, the transaction is complete.

  4. Decide whether to provide the customer with a receipt, and then tap Start new order to return to the Shopify POS products screen.

Manual credit payment

If you don't have a card reader, or if there is a problem with swiping a customer's card, then you can enter credit card details manually to take payment:

  1. From the Select payment dialog, tap Credit.
  2. Enter the credit card details, and then tap Done.
  3. Tap Charge card to process the payment.
  4. Decide whether to provide the customer with a receipt, and then tap Start new order to return to the Shopify POS products screen.

Manual-entry credit card rate

If you enter a customer's credit card information manually, then the transaction is a card-not-present transaction, similar to an online sale. Card-not-present transactions all use the online credit card rate.

External credit and external debit payments

If you use an external card terminal, then you can select External Credit or External Debit from the Select payment dialog to show that the order has been paid and to complete the transaction:

  1. From the Select payment dialog, tap External Credit or External Debit.
  2. If you tapped External Credit, then tap the credit card type that is being processed.
  3. Make sure that you have successfully processed the payment with your external terminal, and then tap Complete order.
  4. Decide whether to provide the customer with a receipt, and then tap Start new order to return to the Shopify POS products screen.

Gift card payment

If your store's on the Shopify plan or higher, then you can accept payment by gift card. If you're using Shopify POS with the retail package, then you can accept payment by physical gift card by scanning the gift card's barcode with the iPad's front-facing camera or a 2D barcode scanner.

To accept payment by gift card:

  1. From the Select payment dialog, tap Gift Card.
  2. Enter the gift card's code in one of two ways:
    • If it's a physical gift card, then hold the barcode 10–15 inches away from the iPad's front-facing camera, or scan the barcode with a 2D barcode scanner.
    • Tap the Gift card code field and enter it manually, and then tap Done
  3. Tap Complete order.
  4. Decide whether to provide the customer with a receipt, and then tap Start new order to return to the Shopify POS products screen.

Custom payment method

In Shopify POS, you can create custom payment methods, such as Cheque, and then select them from the Select payment dialog to mark the order as paid and complete the transaction:

  1. From the Select payment dialog, tap your custom payment method.
  2. Tap Complete order.
  3. Decide whether to provide the customer with a receipt, and then tap Start new order to return to the Shopify POS products screen.

Collect signatures with your iPad

To collect a customer's signature with your iPad:

  1. Allow the customer to sign in the signature box using their finger or a stylus:

  2. If the customer wants to change their signature, then they can tap Clear signature to try again.
  3. When the customer is happy with their signature, they tap Submit signature. After the payment is authorized, the customer is asked to return the iPad.

Find a customer's signature

When a customer authorizes a payment with their signature, their signature is stored safely online. You can find a customer's signature in the Timeline section of the order history page:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Orders.

  2. Click the order number for an in-person card transaction.

  3. In the Timeline section, click the message that says that a card payment was processed:

  2. If the customer is not paying with exact cash, then use the keyboard to enter the amount you're receiving from the customer:

  4. Decide whether to email the customer a receipt, and then tap the check mark to return to the products screen.

Swipe credit payment

To accept a credit payment with the Swipe (audio-jack) card reader:

  1. From the Select payment screen, tap Credit.
  2. Swipe the customer's credit card as shown in the image on the screen:

  4. Decide whether to email the customer a receipt, and then tap the check mark to return to the products screen.

  2. Tap the card type that the customer is using:

  3. Make sure that you have successfully processed the payment with your external terminal.
  4. Tap the check mark to confirm that you've taken payment with your external terminal.
  5. Decide whether to email the customer a receipt, and then tap the check mark to return to the products screen.

Collect signatures with your Android device

To collect a customer's signature with your Android device:

  1. Allow the customer to sign in the signature box using their finger or a stylus:

  2. If the customer wants to change their signature, then they can tap CLEAR to try again.
  3. When the customer is happy with their signature, they tap ACCEPT.

When a customer authorizes a payment with their signature, their signature is stored safely online. You can find a customer's signature in the Timeline section of the order history page:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Orders.

  2. Click the order number for an in-person card transaction.

  3. In the Timeline section, click the message that says that a card payment was processed:
