Editing the checkout form options

You can edit some of the fields on your checkout pages to be required, optional, or hidden.

For example, some customers don't like to provide their phone number during an online checkout, so they might abandon their cart if you make it a required field. In some cases your payment provider might require a customer to provide a phone number to complete the checkout.

To edit your Checkout Form options:

  1. Scroll down to the Form options header

  2. Here, you can set:

  • Full name to require both first and last name, or require last name only
  • Company name to be included on your checkout form (choose hidden to remove it)
  • Apt, bldg, etc. to be included on your checkout form (choose hidden to remove it)
  • Phone number to be hidden, optional, or required.


Some payment providers and shipping carriers require customer phone number. If you have one of these providers or carriers active on your store, your Phone number checkout field setting is overwritten.

Bot prevention

To prevent bots from attacking your Shopify admin and your online store, you and your users can be challenged by a reCaptcha to prove that you are human. These challenges can appear when you are asked to provide identifying information such as account credentials or an email address. For example, to prevent bots from submitting fake email addresses, your customers could be challenged when they sign up for a newsletter. Shopify Plus

Shopify Plus merchants can choose to enable bot challenges on the checkout page of their online store. When this option is enabled, your customers are challenged to prove that they are human before they pay for their orders.

You can enable these challenges for all your checkouts or you can enable them for the duration of a Launchpad event only. You should only enable these challenges if your online store has an issue with bots. Otherwise, you risk lengthening your checkout process unnecessarily.

To enable these challenges for all checkouts, enable the enable reCaptcha option on the Preferences page of the Online store channel.
