Translate your online checkout

You can translate the checkout of your online store in a few different ways.

Select a new checkout language

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Settings, then click Checkout.

  2. Scroll down to the Checkout language section.

  3. Your store's current checkout language is shown. To choose a different language for your checkout, click Manage checkout language:

  4. You're taken straight to the checkout section of the language editor. Click Change theme language, then choose a language from the drop-down and click Save.

    If the language you need isn't available, you can:

    If you choose a language that contains only system and checkout translations, the rest of your website will use the default language for your theme. You can make any other translations you need using the language editor.

Translate checkout fields individually

You have full control over the text that is displayed in each field of your store's checkout process. This helps you personalize your checkout experience to fit your brand. For example, you can make your error messages sound more friendly instead of using the default can't be left blank:

For example, some brands might prefer to use Oops! This can't be left blank etc. To start editing your checkout fields:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Settings, then click Checkout.

  2. Find the Checkout language section and click Manage checkout language:

  3. The text inside the filed is what your checkout page displays. For example, Page title is set to Checkout by default on the New Standard theme:

  4. You can change this to anything you want, for example Secure Checkout.

  5. After you've made all your changes, click Save:

The changes are applied instantly and the next time someone click to check out, they will see the translations that you've saved.

Create your own checkout language

You can create your own checkout language, whether you need to translate your whole checkout or just part of it. Any fields you don't change will stay in the default language.

To create your own checkout language for a theme:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Settings, then click Checkout.

  2. Scroll down to the Checkout language section.

  3. Click Manage checkout language:

  4. In the drop-down, choose Other languages...

  5. Choose from the second and third drop-down menus as follows: Language drop-down: Choose a language. Region drop-down: Choose a region (if applicable), or:

    • Choose All to select all regional variations.
    • Click Custom to create a custom name for the version you're creating, and give it a name.

  6. Click Save. You're taken to the checkout section of the language editor, where you can enter translations of your theme's checkout messages. Your changes are saved automatically.

You can save your work and leave the editor at any time. The new language will now be available when you select a new checkout language for your website. Any untranslated text is shown in the default language of your theme.
