Selling on Instagram

When you sell on Instagram, you can tag products that appear in your Instagram posts. Customers who find your tagged products on Instagram can tap a link to view and buy a product in your online store. Learn more about how customers can shop on Instagram.

To sell your Shopify products on Instagram, you need to be on the Basic Shopify plan or higher, and have products in a Facebook catalog. You can make a Facebook product catalog by setting up the Facebook sales channel.

Eligibility requirements

To use Instagram product tagging, you need to meet a few requirements:

  • You need to have products in a Facebook catalog. If you aren't already selling on Facebook, then you can set up the Facebook sales channel and make products available to the channel to create a Facebook product catalog.
  • You need to use the Online Store sales channel.
  • You need a business profile on Instagram.
  • The Instagram app that you are using needs to be the latest version available in the United States.
  • You need to use the Instagram app from an IP address in the United States.

Product requirements

To sell a product by using Instagram product tagging, the product needs to meet a few requirements:

  • It needs to be a physical product, so it can't be a digital product or a service.
  • It might need to meet requirements for a certain category.
  • It needs to be available to the Online Store sales channel.

You can use Instagram product tagging to sell products from the following categories:

  • apparel/accessories
  • health/beauty products
  • packaged food/beverages (non-alcoholic)
  • electronics
  • home furnishing/appliances
  • sporting/outdoor goods
  • toys/collectibles
  • art/photography
  • flowers/plants
  • office supplies
  • stationary/cards
  • auto parts/accessories
  • musical instruments
  • books

Set up Instagram product tagging

Before you begin setting up Instagram product tagging, make sure that you have a Facebook Business account and have added products to your Facebook catalog. If you have published products to Facebook by using the Facebook sales channel, then you meet this requirement.

You can complete most of the setup for Instagram product tagging on Instagram by following a few basic steps.

To set up your Instagram account:

  1. Create a business profile on Instagram.
  1. Using Instagram, open your profile and then go to your settings.
  2. Tap Products to enable product tagging and review the feature.
  3. Authenticate your Facebook Business account to connect your Instagram business profile to your Facebook product catalog.
  4. Select your Facebook catalog.
  5. Tap Next, and then tap Done.

After you connect your Instagram business profile to your Facebook Business account, you need to wait for approval from Instagram before you can tag products. When you are approved to tag products, you will receive a notification in your Instagram business profile. In the meantime, you can review the eligibility requirements and review your Instagram connection in Shopify.

Review your Instagram connection in Shopify

After you complete the setup on Instagram, you should make sure that your Facebook page is connected to your Instagram business profile in Shopify, so that customers can buy products from your online store. On the Facebook > Account page, make sure that the name of your Instagram account appears in the Instagram account section.

If your Instagram account isn't connected to Shopify after you've completed the setup, then make sure that the Facebook account that's connected to Shopify is the same account that you authenticated on Instagram. If you need to connect a Facebook page to Shopify or change the page that's connected, then you can do so from the Facebook page section.

Manage your product catalog

If you have more than one Facebook product catalog, then you can change which one is connected to your Instagram business account in your Instagram settings. You can use only one Facebook product catalog for Instagram product tagging. Changing the product catalog removes any existing Instagram product tags.

To change the product catalog that is connected to your Instagram business account:

  1. Using Instagram, open your profile and then go to your settings.
  2. Tap Products, and then confirm your Facebook account.
  3. Select the product catalog that you want to use for Instagram product tagging.
  4. Tap Done.

Tagging products on Instagram

After you connect your Instagram business profile to your Facebook Business account, you need to wait for approval from Instagram before you can tag products. When you are approved to tag products, you will receive a notification in your Instagram business profile. In the meantime, you can review the eligibility requirements and review your Instagram connection in Shopify.

Frequently asked questions

Can I tag a product in an Instagram post that isn't available on Facebook?

No. Products need to be available on Facebook to be tagged in an Instagram post.

Do I need to have an Instagram business profile?

Yes. If you have an existing Instagram profile, then you can convert it to a business profile:

  1. Using Instagram, open your profile and then go to your settings.
  2. Tap Switch to business profile and follow the steps to connect Instagram to your Facebook business page. Make sure that you connect to the Facebook page that you added to Shopify.

How can I edit the product information on Instagram?

To change the product description, name, or price shown in the product tag details, you need to edit product listing on Shopify and publish the updated product to Facebook.

How can I track my Instagram sales?

During the testing phase, Instagram sales will appear in reports as coming from your online store. You can track referral traffic from Instagram to see how your online store is impacted by this feature by using report filters. Set a filter for the marketing campaign source to Facebook and for the traffic referrer name to Instagram.
