Setting your online store preferences

You can edit the title and meta description for your online store, add tracking codes, or enable a password page or checkout protection on the Preferences page.

Edit the title and meta description

You can set the page title and meta description for your online store home page. These will display in search engine results. Use descriptive text and keywords to improve the search engine ranking for your online store. Learn more about search engine optimization.

To set the title and meta description of the home page of your online store in Shopify:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Online Store, and then click Preferences.

  2. Enter a title and meta description for your store, following SEO best practices.

  3. Click Save.

Adding tracking codes

You can track visitors to your store with Google Analytics, and you can use Facebook Pixel to help you create ad campaigns for new customers. On the Preferences page, you can add your Google Analytics and Facebook Pixel account information so that your online store will keep track of the relevant data.

Enable or disable the password page

Before you launch your online store, customers will not be able to access your website to view your products. Instead, they will see your password page. The password page is a single page banner that gives customers information about the status of your store. In your password page message, you can include information about your store's expected launch date, the kinds of products that you will sell, recent media coverage, or details about an upcoming sale. There is an email field that customers can use if they want to receive newsletters from your store in the future.

When you open an online store with Shopify, your password page is enabled by default.

To enable or disable your password page:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Online Store, and then click Preferences.

  2. In the Password page section, check or uncheck Enable password page:

  3. If you are enabling the password page, then enter a password and the message for customers.

  4. Click Save.

Enable reCaptcha for checkout protection

You can enable Google reCaptcha challenges so that your customers need to prove that they're human before they make a payment. You should enable challenges only if you have a problem with bots on your online store.

To enable Google reCaptcha challenges for all customers:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Online Store, and then click Preferences.

  2. In the Checkout protection section, check Google reCaptcha.

  3. Click Save.
