Supported label printers

Before you can buy shipping labels, you need to choose the label printer that you want to use. You can do this on the Shipping settings page in your Shopify admin. For best results, Shopify recommends using supported hardware to print your shipping labels.

Shopify supports the following label printers:

Dymo LabelWriter 4XL

You can use the Dymo LabelWriter 4XL to print the shipping labels you buy in Shopify. It connects to your computer via USB. You can buy the Dymo LabelWriter 4XL at the Shopify Hardware Store.

Tip

If you're using an Apple computer to print your shipping labels, then Shopify recommends the Dymo LabelWriter 4XL.

Installation and setup in Mac OSX

Tip

If you need help installing and setting up your Dymo printer, contact Dymo's support.

Before you can use the Dymo printer on Mac OS, you need to download and install DYMO Label Software v8.5.2, Mac. To install the Dymo LabelWriter 4XL on your Apple computer:

  1. Open your web browser.
  2. Open Dymo's website at www.dymo.com/en-US/labelwriter-4xl-label-printer.
  3. Click Support to view the Drivers & Downloads:

  4. Click DYMO Label Software v8.5.2, Mac to download the drivers for your printer.
  5. After the download is complete, open the DLS8Setup.8.5.2.dmg file to install Dymo's Label Software.
  6. Plug your printer in to your computer using the included USB cable, and connect its power adapter. After you turn on the printer, your computer will detect it automatically.

Printing shipping labels in Mac OSX

After you've purchased a shipping label on an order's Fulfillment page in your Shopify admin, you can download the label and print it.

Caution

If you're using the Dymo LabelWriter 4XL, then make sure that you select DYMO LabelWriter 4XL (4" x 6") as your Printer type on the Shipping settings page.

To print a shipping label in Mac OSX:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Orders (or press G O):

    Orders
  2. Click the number of an order that you've already purchased a shipping label for.

  3. In the Order details section, click Download label:

  4. After the download is complete, find and then open the file on your computer.

  5. After you've opened the file, click Print.

  6. On the print dialog, select DYMO LabelWriter 4XL from the Printer drop-down menu:

  7. Select 1744907 4 in X 6 in from the Paper Size drop-down menu. This option won't appear unless you've downloaded and installed DYMO Label Software v8.5.2, Mac.

  8. After you've chosen the correct printer and paper size, click Print.


Installation and setup in Windows 10

To install the Dymo printer in Windows 10, plug your printer in to your computer using the included USB cable, and connect its power adapter. After you turn on the printer, your computer will detect it automatically and download the required device drivers.

To confirm that your printer has been installed:

  1. Open your computer's Control panel.
  2. Click Hardware and Sound.
  3. Click Devices.
  4. In the Printers & Scanners section, confirm that Dymo LabelWriter 4XL appears in the list of printers:

Printing shipping labels in Windows 10

After you've purchased a shipping label, you can download the label and print it.

To print a shipping label in Windows 10:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Orders (or press G O):

    Orders
  2. Click the number of an order that you've already purchased a shipping label for.

  3. In the Order details section, click Download label:

  4. After the download is complete, find and then open the file on your computer.

  5. After you've opened the file, click the ... button, and then click Print.

  6. On the print dialog, select DYMO LabelWriter 4XL from the Printer menu:

  7. Make sure that the Paper size is 1744907 4 in x 6 in:

  8. Click Print.

Zebra GC420d

For best results, use the Zebra GC420d thermal printer to print the shipping labels you purchase in Shopify. It connects to your computer via USB, serial, or parallel ports.

Installation and setup in Mac OSX

If you need help installing and setting up your Zebra printer, contact Zebra's support.

To use the Zebra printer on Mac OS, Zebra recommends using the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) driver.

To install the CUPS driver:

  1. Open your web browser.
  2. Enter http://localhost:631/printers/ into the URL field.
  3. If you receive a message that Web Interface is Disabled, then you must enable it. Start by copying the cupsctl WebInterface=yes command that's displayed in your browser.
  4. Open the Terminal application on your computer, and then paste the cupsctl WebInterface=yes command into the Terminal command line. When you're done, press Return.
  5. Click on your open browser, and refresh the Web Interface is Disabled page. It will display the CUPS page instead.
  6. From the CUPS page, click the Home tab.
  7. Click Adding Printers and Classes.
  8. In the Printers section, click Add Printer.
  9. If you're asked to enter a user ID and password, use the same credentials that you use to log-in to your computer. After you log in, the Administration page appears.
  10. If you've already turned on and plugged in your GC420d printer, it will appear as Zebra Technologies ZTC GC420d (Zebra Technologies ZTC GC420d) in the Local Printers section. If you haven't connected your printer yet, turn it on now, plug it into your computer using the included USB cable, and then refresh your browser.
  11. Select Zebra Technologies ZTC GC420d (Zebra Technologies ZTC GC420d), and then click Continue.
  12. Review the information on the Add Printer page, and then click Continue.
  13. From the Model menu, select Zebra ZPL Label Printer (en), and then click Add Printer.

After you have installed the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) driver, you can print a test page:

  1. Open your web browser.
  2. Enter http://localhost:631/printers/ into the URL field, and press Return.
  3. Click the name of the printer you want to test.
  4. From the Maintenance drop-down menu, select Print Test Page.

Printing shipping labels in Mac OSX

After you've purchased a shipping label on an order's Fulfillment page in your Shopify admin, you can download the label and print it.

To print a shipping label in Mac OSX:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Orders (or press G O):

  2. Click the number of an order that you've already purchased a shipping label for.

  3. In the Order details section, click Download label:

  4. After the download is complete, find and then open the file on your computer.

  5. After you've opened the file, click Print.

  6. On the print dialog, select Zebra Technologies ZTC GC420d from the Printer drop-down menu:

  7. Select 4.00x6.00 from the Paper Size drop-down menu.

  8. After you've chosen the correct printer and paper size, click Print.

Installation and setup in Windows 7

Note

If you're using a different version of Windows, then you might need to set up your printer differently.

To set up the Zebra printer in Windows 7:

  1. Turn on the label printer, and connect it to your computer using the included USB cable.
  2. After the printer is connected, your computer automatically downloads the require device drivers.
  3. Open your computer's Control panel.
  4. Click Hardware and Sound.
  5. Click Devices and Printers.
  6. In the Printers section, right click on ZDesigner GC420d:

  8. On the Printing preferences dialog, find the Size section, and then enter 4.00 into the Width field and 6.00 into the Height field:

Printing shipping labels in Windows 7

Note

If you're using a different version of Windows, then you might need to set up your printer differently.

After you've purchased a shipping label on an order's Fulfillment page in your Shopify admin, you can download the label and print it.

To print a shipping label in Windows 7:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Orders (or press G O):
