Setting up tax rates for Shopify POS

The Shopify POS app applies taxes based on the store location that you assign to your POS device. If you're using Shopify POS for iPad or iPhone, then you can also enable tax rates based on the current GPS location of your device.

After your tax settings are configured, you can adjust the taxes that are applied to individual orders or products during a transaction from the Shopify POS cart.

Set the tax rate for a new POS location

The Shopify POS app applies taxes based on the store location that you assign to your POS device. If you're using Shopify POS away from your store location and you have local tax rates enabled, then the tax rate is based on the current GPS location of your iPad or iPhone (iOS devices only).

To set a tax rate for a new POS location:

  1. Make sure that the new location is included in your shipping list so that taxes can be calculated correctly. You need to do this step even if you never ship your products (for example, if you're only running Shopify POS), and even if you have local tax rates enabled.

  1. In the Tax rates section, click the tax region and set the tax rate, then click Save taxes.

  2. Add the new location to your Locations settings.

  3. Assign your Shopify POS device to the new location. If the new location isn't shown, then background the app by pressing the home button on your device. Open the Shopify POS app again, and your new location should be available.

Enable local tax rates based on GPS

If you enable local tax rates, then Shopify POS will retrieve the tax rate for your current location by using your wi-fi connection and GPS whenever you're away from the device's assigned location.

For example, if your store location is specified as Los Angeles but you're selling at a market in San Francisco, then Shopify POS will charge state tax only (and not county tax) because your transaction is made outside of LA county.

If this option is turned off, then Shopify POS applies the tax rates for the device's assigned location.
